Children's Memorial Institute The Children's Memorial Institute is an entity comprising of about 30 separate Organizations, mostly

The Children's Memorial Institute is currently functioning as a multitude of separate but complementary services that are provided mostly but not exclusively through NGOs. There are at present several NGO organizations including governmental institutions. The commonality of these NGOs is that their services are primarily if not wholly aimed at children and in most cases children who have special needs. These specialized services are characterized in the main by their conspicuous absence in the public sector hospitals. Even the academic hospitals with paediatric departments present often lack these services. The services offered by CMI are thus filling a gap and meeting the needs of these children and their families. The vast majority of the recipients of the services are from disadvantaged backgrounds and similar services in the private sector are either non-existent or are unaffordable. There is a long history of service provision to the children of Johannesburg by this institution going back several decades. The services provided by the organizations present are not only supported by donor funding but indeed by the Departments of Social Development, Basic Education and Department of Health (mostly through some maintenance via the Department of Infrastructural Development). The organizations providing the services are mostly dealing with issues relating to the psychosocial well being of children and others directly dealing with heath and few with educational issues. In September we launched our Sensory Garden for Spring 2026. Courage Child Protection & Empowerment, the Sensory-Space and the Children's Memorial Institute teams have been building the Sensory Garden over the past 6 months, with support from our community. The Paul & Humile Mashatile Foundation contributed towards our pots and plantings and gave the CMI a very generous donation for hosting their β€˜Growing Inclusion’ event.

For those who have already visited the Sensory Garden, please share your experience with us and link us on your posts. For anyone wanting a guided tour for your teams or beneficiaries, or to book an event, please DM the CMI to set this up.

This is a short video interview about the purpose and making of the CMI Sensory Garden.

Thank you to everyone who helped and supported us on this exciting project.
Warm regards
