WHAT IS MARRIAGE? Traditional Marriage vs Biblical Marriage

Family, let's be honest. Many of us are confused.

Our grandmothers taught us one thing about marriage. The Bible says another thing. And modern life says another thing.

So what IS marriage really?

Let's compare, with respect.

*1. TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE (African Custom)*

In our tradition, marriage is not just between two people. It is between TWO FAMILIES.

- Lobola is paid. Not to buy a woman. To show appreciation, to bind families, to show you are serious.
- Ancestors are involved. Marriage is blessed by elders and by those who came before us.
- Family has a say. Uncles, aunts, mothers sit down. Marriage is community.
- Roles are clear. Man provides and protects. Woman nurtures and keeps the home. Respect (inhlonipho) is law.
- Children are central. Marriage without children feels incomplete in tradition.

Strength of Traditional Marriage: It has a support system. When you fight, families intervene. You are not alone.

Weakness when misused: Sometimes elders force people to stay in abusive marriages. Sometimes lobola is used to control. "Ngikuthengile." That's not our tradition. That's abuse using tradition.

*2. BIBLICAL MARRIAGE*

The Bible says in Genesis 2:24 β€” A man shall leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

- Marriage is a COVENANT before God, not just a contract between families. God is the witness.
- It is between ONE man and ONE woman. Love, sacrifice, faithfulness.
- The model is Christ and the Church. Man must LOVE his wife like Christ loved the church β€” to die for her. Woman must RESPECT and submit willingly, not by force.
- Forgiveness is key. 70 times 7. Grace is the foundation.
- Marriage is for companionship first, before children. "It is not good for man to be alone."

Strength of Biblical Marriage: It teaches unconditional love, forgiveness, and God as the centre. When money ends and families are far, God keeps you.

Weakness when misused: Some people use "submission" to abuse. "The Bible says you must submit." But the same Bible says "Husbands love your wives." You cannot demand submission without showing love.

*SO WHICH ONE IS RIGHT?*

Family, you are African AND you are Christian for most of us. You don't have to choose.

True marriage for us should be BOTH:

Take from Tradition: Respect, family support, lobola as honour, Ubuntu.
Take from the Bible: Love, grace, God as foundation, one flesh covenant.

The problem today is we take the WORST of both.

We take from tradition: Control and patriarchy.
We take from modern life: Divorce quickly when it's hard.
We leave behind: What tradition did well (community) and what the Bible does well (sacrificial love).

Marriage is not about who is the boss. It is about: Can two become one and stay one when life gets hard?

So before you say "I don't believe in marriage," ask yourself:

Did you see a TRADITIONAL marriage done in love, or done in abuse?
Did you see a BIBLICAL marriage done in grace, or done in control?

Because real marriage, whether traditional or biblical, has the same fruit: Peace, love, respect, safety, growth.

If there is no peace, it's not marriage. It's prison.

"What is marriage?

In tradition, marriage is between TWO FAMILIES. Lobola binds families.

In the Bible, marriage is a COVENANT before God, one man one woman becoming one flesh. One gives you community support, the other gives you God as foundation.

The best marriage? Take both. Respect from tradition, love from the Bible. That is marriage."

WHY ARE PEOPLE AFRAID OF MARRIAGE?

Family, let's not lie. Many people want marriage. But they are AFRAID of marriage.

It's not that they don't want love. They are scared of what love has done to others.

Why?

*1. THEY SAW MARRIAGE DESTROY THEIR PARENTS*

A child who grew up seeing his father beat his mother, will fear marriage.

A child who saw her mother cry every night because her father was cheating, will say, "I will never marry."

We don't fear marriage. We fear REPEATING what we saw.

Many of you in the comments will say: "I saw my mom suffer. I don't want that life." That's your trauma speaking, not your heart.

*2. FEAR OF CHOOSING THE WRONG PERSON*

This is the biggest fear today.

"What if I choose wrong? What if I pay lobola, do a big wedding, then after 2 years she changes? What if after 2 years he shows his true colours?"

We have seen people who dated for 5 years, good. Married for 1 year, hell.

So people stay in relationships for 8, 10 years without marrying. Not because they don't want to marry. Because they are testing: "Are you really the one?"

Fear of divorce is real. No one wants to be called "divorced at 32."

*3. FINANCIAL FEAR*

Marriage is expensive.

Lobola: R40k, R70k, R120k...
Wedding: R80k, R150k...
House: Rent, black tax, children, school.

A young man looks at his salary of R12k and says: "How can I marry? I can't even afford myself."

So he says "I don't believe in marriage" but the truth is "I can't AFFORD marriage right now."

And women also fear: "If I marry a broke man, I will suffer." So both are afraid.

*4. LOSS OF FREEDOM*

Many people think marriage = prison.

"No more friends. No more going out. No more being me. My husband will control me. My wife will nag me."

This fear comes from seeing controlling marriages.

Real marriage is not supposed to take your freedom. It's supposed to give you a PARTNER for your freedom. But many have not seen that.

*5. PAST HEARTBREAK*

Some of you were ready to marry. You were engaged. You even paid lobola. Then she cheated. He left you for someone else. She aborted without telling you. He beat you.

That pain never left.

So now you say: "I will never marry. I will just have children and stay alone."

You are not afraid of marriage. You are protecting a broken heart.

*6. SOCIAL MEDIA HAS DESTROYED TRUST*

Every day you see: "Men are trash." "Women are for the streets." "He cheated." "She cheated."

After watching 100 videos about cheating, you start to believe everyone cheats.

Fear grows.

*SO WHAT IS THE TRUTH?*

Marriage itself is not scary. PEOPLE are scary. What people DO in marriage is scary.

Good marriage still exists. I have seen gogos and mkhulus married for 45 years still holding hands.

It exists. But you must:

- Heal before you marry. Don't bring your parents' trauma into your marriage.
- Choose character, not just love. Love is feeling. Character stays when feelings fade.
- Build with God or with your values at the centre. Not just with money.
- Learn to communicate. Many marriages die not from cheating, but from silence.

Don't say "I will never marry" because you saw a bad marriage.

Say: "I will learn how to do marriage DIFFERENTLY from what I saw."

*YOUR TURN:*

Why do YOU think people are afraid of marriage today? Be honest.

And if you are married, what kept you going when you wanted to quit? Your story can heal someone.

Why don't you believe in marriage? Why ungafuni kutshata?

I've been seeing this a lot lately.

Some people say: "Marriage is not for me. I don't believe in it."

Others say: "I want to marry, but I don't trust people anymore."

So let's talk, honestly.

For some, it's not that they don't believe in marriage. They don't believe in the marriages they have SEEN.

They saw their parents fight.
They saw cheating.
They saw a mother suffer in marriage.
They saw a father who was not present.
They saw divorce that broke the family.

So they say: "If that's marriage, I don't want it."

For others, it's pain. They were engaged. They paid lobola. They planned. Then it fell apart. Now they say: "I will never try again."

And for some, it's fear. "What if I fail? What if I choose wrong? What if I lose myself?"

So I want to ask you β€” the real question:

Is it that you don't believe in marriage... or you don't believe you will find the RIGHT person to marry?

Be honest with me in the comments. No judgement.

React:
😍 = I BELIEVE in marriage, I want to marry / I am happily married
❀️ = I DON'T believe in marriage anymore / I don't want to marry

And please comment WHY. Your story might help someone else.

Let's talk. Real talk.

HOW TO REBUILD AFTER LOSING EVERYTHING

Some of us have lost everything.

Job. Money. Business. Relationship. House. Car. Reputation.

You look at your life and ask: Where do I even start?

Family, listen to me. You have not lost everything. You lost things. But you are still here. And as long as you are breathing, you can rebuild.

How?

1. Accept what happened, don't deny it.
Stop pretending you are okay. Say: "I lost. I failed. It hurts." Acceptance is not giving up. It is the first step to healing. You cannot fix what you refuse to face.

2. Grieve, but don't build your house in grief.
Cry. Be angry. Be sad. But set a date. Say: "I will mourn until Sunday, but Monday I start moving." If you stay too long in grief, grief becomes your identity.

3. Start small. Very small.
Don't try to rebuild the mansion in one day. Start with one brick. Clean your room. Wake up early. Save R10. Apply for one job. Small wins rebuild your confidence.

4. Cut the noise. Go quiet.
When you have lost everything, you don't need advice from everyone. You need silence, prayer, and a plan. Stay off social media for a while. Stop comparing. Your comeback will be private first.

5. Use your loss as your lesson.
What did losing teach you? That you trusted too quickly? That you didn't save? That you ignored red flags? Your pain paid for wisdom. Don't waste it. Write the lessons down.

Family, God never rebuilds you to be the same. He rebuilds you to be stronger, wiser, softer, more humble.

You lost everything, but everything did not lose you. You are still here.

Tell yourself: I will rise again. Not like before. Better.

Comment below: I AM STILL HERE. I WILL REBUILD.

IS DEBT KILLING YOUR PEACE?

Let's be honest. Many of us can't sleep because of debt.

You smile at work. But your phone is on silent because you are scared of collectors calling.

You borrowed to survive. You borrowed to help family. You borrowed to look okay. Now debt is eating your salary before it even enters.

Signs debt is killing your peace:

1. You borrow to pay debt.
Mashonisa to pay Capitec. Capitec to pay Tyme. Tyme to pay friend. It's a circle. You are not paying, you are rotating pain.

2. You hide messages and calls.
When your phone rings, your heart beats fast. You deleted banking apps because you are scared to check balance.

3. You fight at home because of money.
Debt brings fights. Husband and wife argue not because they don't love each other, but because money stress is too much.

4. You work but you feel poor.
Your salary comes in and in 2 hours it's gone to debt. You worked 30 days for 2 hours of money.

Family, debt is not just financial. It's emotional. It steals peace, sleep, and dignity.

So what do we do?

Step 1: List all your debts. Don't hide. Write them down. Face it.
Step 2: Talk to your creditors. Many can make a payment plan. Hiding makes it worse.
Step 3: Start with the smallest debt. Kill it first. That small win gives you power to kill the next one.
Step 4: Stop borrowing for lifestyle. Borrow only for things that can bring money back, not to impress.
Step 5: Forgive yourself. You didn't borrow because you are stupid. You borrowed because life was hard and you had no better option then.

You can get out. Slowly. But you will get out.

Comment below: "I will face my debt, not run from it."
