Sometimes the hardest part of making a decision isn’t knowing what you need, it’s thinking about what your decision might mean for everyone else.
When I knew I needed to leave my job, my first thoughts weren’t about me, they were about the children.
- Will they feel abandoned?
- Will they understand?
- Will they be okay?
- Am I letting them down?
I realised how easily we can become so accustomed to considering everyone else that I slowly removed myself from the equation.
I see versions of this in women all the time. Before making a decision, we calculate the emotional cost to our children, partners, colleagues, families, clients, usually everyone except ourselves.
Caring deeply about other people isn’t a problem, losing yourself while doing it is.
Emotional regulation and self-awareness aren’t about becoming selfish or caring less. They can help us create enough space to recognise our own needs alongside the needs of the people we love.
Sometimes one of the most important question we can learn to ask is, “And what do I need?” If this feels familiar, you’re in the right place. 💛
