This is a bit of a long read - but it is true of any business. If you can do it yourself, good; if not, someone else can do it for you, at a cost (and to make a living)!

•A customer asked me how much it would cost to make a table.
•I answered, “R1500”
•He replied, “Is it really so expensive?”
•So I asked, “How much do you think it would cost you to make it?”
•He answers, “R800 maximum. It’s a pretty simple job right?”
• I respond, “For R800, I invite you to make it yourself.”
•He says, “But.... I don't know how to?”
•”For R800, I'll teach you how to make it. Aside from saving you R700, you'll gain the knowledge for next time. I will take time out of my day and show you exactly how to make this table,” I said.
•It seemed right to him and he agreed.
•I added, “To get started, you will need tools. A table saw; a planer; sanding equipment; circular saw; clamps; wood glue; drills; sealants; etc.”
•”But I don't have all that equipment and I can't buy all of it for just one job?” he said.
•”Well, for R250 more, I'll rent all my equipment to you so you can do it,” I say.
•”Ok!” he says.
•“Ok! On Tuesday I'll be waiting for you to start doing this work.”
•”But I can't on Tuesday, I only have time today?” He responds.
•”I'm sorry, but I'm only available on Tuesday to teach you how to make it and to lend you my equipment. Other days I will be busy with my other customers.”
•”Ok! That means I'm going to have to sacrifice my Tuesday and give up my plans,” he says.
•I respond, “Oh, I forgot! To do the job yourself at my premises, you also have to pay for the nonproductive factors.”
•”What exactly is that?” he asks.
•”Tax, vat, electricity, security, insurance, fuel etc.”
•”Oh no!” he replies. “But to accomplish those tasks, I'm going to have to spend more money and waste a lot of time!”
•”Can you do them? You agreed to do it?" I ask.
•”Ok!” He says.
•” I respond, “I'll prepare all the equipment you will need. In the meantime, you can use the truck to drive to suppliers to source the wood and bring it to the premises. Make sure you get the right wood for the job. You might need to drive to a few suppliers to find the one you want. You will need a team to load the wood as it is heavy. The truck loading is done on Monday evening or Tuesday morning. You will have to be there by 06h00am to load the truck. Please be on time to avoid traffic before the truck leaves.”
•”At 06h00am?! Nope! That’s too early for me! I am used to getting up later,” he replies.
•He continues, “You know, I've been thinking. You better get the job done. I would rather pay you the R1500. If I had to make it, it wouldn't be perfect and it would cost me a lot more.”
•Moral of the story:
•When you pay for a job, especially handcrafted, you pay not only for the material used, but also:
- Knowledge
- Experience
- Supplier relationships
- Tools and equipment
- Workshop space
- Electricity
- Time
- Logistics
- Accounting
- Staff
- Packaging
- Safety equipment and security measures
- Payment of obligations (insurance, etc)
•Before complaining about a price, you will need to know all the elements necessary for the production of a certain job to estimate the actual cost.

I did not write this, but I’m sharing it to support craftsmanship and entrepreneurs.
