The Bath Metaphor: Murky Water

Sometimes it is not that our bath is empty.
Sometimes it is full, but filled with the wrong kind of water.

The water may have become murky over time, filled with stress, old hurt, guilt, fear, resentment, pressure, or exhaustion. We may try to pour clean water in, rest, support, coping tools, kindness, but the bath is already too full. The clean water lands in the murky water and feels like it disappears.

So healing may not begin by simply adding more.

Sometimes it begins by gently pulling the plug.

Letting some of the old water drain.
Naming what has become heavy.
Chipping away at the grime around the edges.

Releasing what no longer belongs.
Making space for something cleaner to enter.

And as the murky water slowly drains, we can begin adding clean water again, little by little. Not all at once. Not perfectly. Just steadily.

A small boundary.
A moment of rest.
A difficult truth spoken kindly.
A breath.
A choice.
A new rhythm.

Over time, the bath becomes clearer.
And when enough of the old has been released, we can begin to rebuild, re-plug, and refill with what truly restores us.
