Beard Balm Recipe

This nourishing tallow beard balm helps soften beard hair, moisturize the skin underneath, and provides light to medium hold for styling. Perfect for daily use.

Ingredients (100g Batch)

- 45g Rendered Beef Tallow
- 20g Shea Butter
- 15g Beeswax
- 15g Jojoba Oil
- 5g Castor Oil
- 0.5g Vitamin E Oil (Optional – helps slow oxidation)

Optional Essential Oil Blend (1% Total)

- 0.4g Cedarwood Essential Oil
- 0.3g Frankincense Essential Oil
- 0.3g Lavender Essential Oil

Method

1. Add the tallow, shea butter, and beeswax to a heatproof container.
2. Melt gently using a double boiler method until fully melted.
3. Remove from heat and add the jojoba oil and castor oil. Stir well.
4. Allow the mixture to cool slightly.
5. When the temperature drops below approximately 45°C, add Vitamin E and essential oils.
6. Stir thoroughly and pour into clean tins or jars.
7. Leave undisturbed until fully set.

Benefits of Each Ingredient

Tallow – Rich in fatty acids that help condition beard hair and moisturize dry skin.

Shea Butter – Softens coarse beard hair and helps reduce dryness.

Beeswax – Adds hold and structure while helping tame flyaway hairs.

Jojoba Oil – Lightweight oil that closely resembles natural skin oils.

Castor Oil – Adds shine and conditioning properties.

Adjusting Firmness

- For a softer balm: reduce beeswax to 10g
- For a firmer balm: increase beeswax to 20g
- For hot climates: slightly increase beeswax to improve stability

Notes

- Use well-rendered, deodorized tallow for the best scent profile.
- Always patch test essential oils before use.
- Store in a cool, dry place.
- Approximate shelf life: 6–12 months.

🌈 Talking Colours & Dyes in Skincare 🌈
Colours in skincare and bath products are not just for beauty — they help create branding, visual appeal and product identity. Different colourants work differently depending on the product you are making.
TYPES OF COLOURS & DYES
1. Water-Soluble Dyes
These are used in:
Shampoos
Bubble bath
Toners
Liquid soap
Bath products
✅ Gives bright, vibrant colours
✅ Excellent for clear products
✅ Easy to use
⚠️ Can bleed or migrate in layered products.
How to use:
Our water-soluble dyes are already pre-diluted and ready to use, so they can be added directly into your product batch. Add slowly drop by drop until the desired colour is achieved.
2. Oil-Soluble Dyes
Used for:
Lip balms
Body oils
Oil serums
Lipsticks
Anhydrous products
✅ Rich colour payoff
✅ Blends beautifully into oils
How to use:
Our oil-soluble dyes are already diluted and ready to use. Simply add directly into the oil phase or finished product and mix thoroughly.
3. Pigments
Pigments do not dissolve — they disperse.
Used for:
Creams
Lotions
Makeup
Decorative soaps
Bath bombs
Examples:
Iron oxides
Titanium dioxide
Ultramarines
✅ Stable and long lasting
✅ Excellent opacity and coverage
How to use:
Pre-disperse in glycerine, oil or a small amount of product before adding to avoid speckling.
4. Micas
Micas provide shimmer and sparkle.
Perfect for:
Soap
Body butter
Scrubs
Bath bombs
Highlighters
✅ Pearlescent effect
✅ Wide variety of shades
⚠️ Some micas may fade or morph in cold process soap.
How to use:
Mix into oil or glycerine first for smooth dispersion.
5. Lake Dyes
Lake dyes are pigments created from dyes combined with insoluble substrates. They are excellent for products where you do not want the colour to bleed.
Best used in:
Bath bombs
Bath salts
Shower steamers
Foaming bath products
Powder-based products
✅ Vibrant colours
✅ More stable than water-soluble dyes in dry products
✅ Less colour bleeding
✅ Ideal for multi-coloured bath bombs and layered products
How to use:
Mix lake dyes evenly into dry ingredients before adding wet ingredients. They can also be pre-mixed into a small amount of oil for easier blending.
⚠️ Using too much may stain baths or skin temporarily.
6. Natural Colourants
Examples:
Turmeric → yellow
Beetroot powder → pink
Spirulina → green
Activated charcoal → black
Cocoa powder → brown
✅ Natural marketing appeal
✅ Popular in clean beauty products
⚠️ Can fade over time and may vary batch to batch.
How to use:
Mix powders into glycerine, water or oils before adding.
IMPORTANT TIPS 🌸
✅ Always use cosmetic-grade colourants
✅ Start with small amounts
✅ Keep records of usage rates
✅ Some fragrances can discolour products
✅ Test colours for stability over time
✅ Check if colours are lip-safe or eye-safe where applicable
COMMON COLOUR PROBLEMS
❌ Speckling
Usually caused by poor dispersion.
❌ Colour Bleeding
Common with water-soluble dyes.
❌ Fading
Natural colourants may fade in sunlight or over time.
❌ Morphing
Some colours change in high pH products like cold process soap.
Colour is where science meets creativity 🎨
Experimenting with different colourants helps create beautiful, professional and unique products your customers will remember.

Understanding Consumer Behavior
A Simple Tutorial for Small Business Owners & Crafters
If you want to grow your business, you must understand one important thing:
People do not buy products… they buy solutions, emotions, experiences, and results.
This is called Consumer Behavior.
Consumer behavior is the study of:
Why people buy
What makes them choose one product over another
How emotions influence buying decisions
What encourages repeat customers
Understanding consumer behavior helps you:
Increase sales
Create better products
Improve marketing
Build loyal customers
Understand your target market
1. People Buy With Emotion First
Most customers buy emotionally and justify with logic later.
Example:
A customer does not buy:
Soap
They buy:
Relaxation
Self-care
Luxury
Beautiful skin
Stress relief
Confidence
Instead of saying:
“This soap contains shea butter.”
Say:
“This creamy shea butter soap leaves your skin soft, nourished, and pampered after a long day.”
You are selling the experience, not only the ingredient.
2. Customers Want Solutions
People usually buy products to solve a problem.
Common Customer Problems:
Problem
Product Solution
Dry skin
Body butter
Stress
Bath bombs
Sensitive skin
Gentle soap
Dull skin
Exfoliating scrub
Bad odors
Room sprays
Hair damage
Hair masks
Ask Yourself:
“What problem does my product solve?”
Then market the solution clearly.
3. First Impressions Matter
Customers judge products quickly based on:
Packaging
Labels
Photos
Colors
Branding
Clean presentation
People often believe:
Beautiful packaging = better quality
Cheap-looking packaging = lower value
Tips:
Use clear labels
Take bright photos
Keep branding consistent
Use attractive colors
Make products look professional
Remember: People buy with their eyes first.
4. Social Proof Influences Buyers
People trust other customers.
This is called Social Proof.
Examples:
Reviews
Testimonials
Before and after photos
Customer pictures
Facebook comments
Product ratings
When customers see others enjoying your products, they feel safer buying from you.
Tip:
Always encourage customers to:
Leave reviews
Post photos
Tag your business
Share experiences
5. Customers Love Stories
Stories create emotional connection.
Instead of:
“Lavender Bath Bomb”
Try:
“Relax after a stressful day with our calming lavender bath bomb designed to turn your bath into a spa experience.”
Stories help customers imagine using the product.
6. Price Affects Consumer Perception
Many people believe:
Expensive = higher quality
Cheap = lower quality
This does not mean you must overcharge.
It means:
Price your products fairly
Package them professionally
Show value clearly
Customers pay more for:
Quality
Convenience
Luxury feel
Handmade products
Unique items
Good service
7. Consumer Trends Change
Customer preferences change over time.
Popular Trends Right Now:
Natural skincare
Eco-friendly packaging
Sulphate-free products
Self-care products
Handmade items
Luxury bath products
Business owners must watch trends and adapt.
8. Good Customer Service Creates Repeat Buyers
Happy customers return.
Simple things matter:
Friendly communication
Fast replies
Neat packaging
Reliable delivery
Thank you messages
A repeat customer is more valuable than constantly finding new customers.
9. Advertising Creates Desire
Good advertising:
Gets attention
Creates emotion
Shows benefits
Encourages action
Weak Advertising:
“Soap for sale.”
Better Advertising:
“Transform your daily bath into a luxurious spa experience with our handmade moisturizing soap.”
10. Understand Your Target Market
Not everyone is your customer.
You must know:
Age group
Interests
Budget
Lifestyle
Problems
Buying habits
Example:
Luxury body butter customers may prefer:
Elegant packaging
Premium fragrances
High-end branding
Budget-conscious customers may prefer:
Affordable pricing
Value packs
Simplicity
Final Thoughts
Successful businesses understand people.
The best sellers:
Solve problems
Create emotions
Build trust
Offer value
Make customers feel special
Remember:
“Customers do not buy products…
They buy how the product makes them feel.”
Study your customers. Listen to feedback. Improve constantly. And always focus on providing value.

How to Make Layered Melt & Pour Soap with Different Colours
Creating layered melt and pour soap is one of the easiest and most beautiful soap projects for beginners and experienced crafters alike. Using melt and pour soap bases and vibrant mica colours from funwithsoap.co.za, you can make stunning handmade soaps with colourful layers, shimmer, and fragrance.
What You Will Need
Ingredients
Melt & Pour Soap Base from funwithsoap.co.za
Clear base for transparent layers
White or Goat’s Milk base for pastel colours
Cosmetic-grade mica powders in different colours
Fragrance oil or essential oil (optional)
Rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle
Equipment
Silicone soap mould
Microwave-safe jug or double boiler
Soap cutter or knife
Stirring spatula
Measuring spoons
Step 1: Prepare Your Soap Base
Cut your melt and pour soap base into small cubes. Smaller pieces melt faster and more evenly.
Place the cubes into a microwave-safe jug and melt in short 20–30 second bursts, stirring between each burst.
Do not overheat the soap base because it can become rubbery or develop bubbles.
Step 2: Add Your First Colour
Choose your first mica colour.
Add a small amount of mica powder to the melted soap and stir well until completely blended. Mica creates vibrant, shimmering colours in melt and pour soap.
Optional:
Add fragrance oil
Add glitter or botanicals
Step 3: Pour the First Layer
Pour the coloured soap into your mould.
Spray the surface lightly with rubbing alcohol to remove bubbles and create a smooth finish.
Allow the layer to cool until a skin forms on top. The layer should feel firm but still slightly warm.
Step 4: Create the Second Layer
Melt another portion of soap base.
Add a different mica colour and mix thoroughly.
Before pouring:
Lightly scratch the surface of the first layer with a fork or toothpick.
Spray with rubbing alcohol.
This helps the layers stick together.
Slowly pour the second layer over the back of a spoon to prevent breaking through the first layer.
Step 5: Repeat for More Layers
Continue repeating the process with different colours until your mould is full.
Popular colour combinations:
Pink, purple, and blue
Rainbow layers
Black and gold
Ocean-inspired blues and turquoise
Pastel rainbow
Step 6: Allow the Soap to Set
Leave the soap to harden completely for 1–2 hours at room temperature.
Once fully hardened:
Remove from the mould
Wrap in plastic wrap to prevent glycerin dew
Store in a cool, dry place
Tips for Perfect Layers
Let each layer cool slightly before adding the next.
If layers separate, the previous layer was too cold.
Spray alcohol between every layer for better adhesion.
Use white soap base for pastel colours and clear soap base for vibrant transparent layers.
Mix mica thoroughly to avoid speckles.
Creative Ideas
Ombre Soap
Use the same mica colour but gradually add more colour to each layer.
Glitter Layer Soap
Add biodegradable glitter between layers for sparkle.
Diagonal Layers
Tilt the mould while the soap cools to create angled layers.
Embedded Soap Shapes
Add soap embeds like hearts, flowers, or stars between layers.
