Key Viral Trends from the Latest NICD Respiratory Pathogens Report

Recent data from the NICD report shows three important viral trends in clinics and schools:

1️⃣Influenza A: In public clinics, the common strain is H1N1 (swine flu), while private doctors see more H3N2. Both strains cause quick high fevers and body aches.
2️⃣RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus): This virus is the main reason for bronchiolitis in babies under one year, leading to thick mucus, coughing, and breathing problems.
3️⃣Adenovirus & Gastro Clusters: Many toddlers aged 1 to 5 have respiratory symptoms with stomach cramps or vomiting.
🛑 When to See a Doctor Immediately
Most viral infections can be managed with rest and hydration at home. However, seek urgent medical care if you notice any of these warning signs:
‼️Flared nostrils or chest “sucking in” under the ribs while breathing
‼️Rapid, shallow breathing or wheezing sounds
Inability to keep fluids down, leading to fewer than three wet nappies a day
‼️A high fever that refuses to drop even after administering paracetamol
🛡️ Quick Prevention Tips
✅It is not too late for the flu vaccine: The current season will run through August. The vaccine protects against the currently circulating dominant H1N1 and H3N2 strains.
✅Prioritise hand wash.
✅Let’s keep our children warm and healthy

Could exercise actually help the brain forget traumatic memories? A recent study suggests it can. Consistent physical activity promotes neurogenesis the creation of new neurons especially in the hippocampus, the brain’s memory hub.

By integrating new neurons into existing circuits, exercise can weaken or disrupt older, maladaptive memories, offering a potential way to ease the recall of trauma.

Exercise also boosts BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), strengthening existing neurons while supporting new growth. At the same time, it enhances the prefrontal cortex, improving focus, emotional control, and stress regulation.

For trauma survivors, activities like running can do more than build fitness they can help regain a sense of control over the body and mind, an essential step in processing difficult experiences.

The science is still evolving, but the link between movement and memory is becoming impossible to ignore.
