๐Ÿ’™ 3 Evidence-Based Exercises for a Stronger Back

Exercise is one of the most effective treatments for most cases of non-specific lower back pain. Research shows that regular, appropriate exercise can help reduce pain, improve function, and build confidence in movement.

Today I'm demonstrating three excellent exercises that are commonly included in back rehabilitation programmes:

โœ… Bird Dog โ€“ Improves core stability, balance and spinal control.

โœ… Glute Bridge โ€“ Strengthens the glutes and posterior chain to better support your lower back.

โœ… Modified Side Plank โ€“ Builds endurance of the core muscles, particularly the muscles that help stabilise your spine during everyday activities.

๐Ÿ’ก Remember: There is no single "best" exercise for everyone. The most effective programme is one that is tailored to your individual needs and progressed appropriately.

If you have persistent back pain, don't ignore it. A Biokineticist can assess the underlying causes and develop a personalised exercise programme to help you move with confidence.

Movement is medicine โ€” especially when it comes to managing lower back pain. ๐Ÿ’™

Current evidence shows that staying active and participating in appropriate exercise can help reduce pain, improve function, and support long-term back health.

Exercise may help to:
โœ” Reduce pain and stiffness
โœ” Improve strength and mobility
โœ” Support better posture and movement
โœ” Boost confidence in daily activities
โœ” Help reduce the risk of future episodes of back pain

You donโ€™t need to start with intense exercise. Small, consistent movements can make a meaningful difference over time.

If back pain or stiffness is affecting your daily life, a Biokinetics assessment can help you find safe, evidence-based exercises suited to your needs.

Many of us spend hours sitting at a desk, driving, or studying. While sitting itself is not "bad," remaining in the same position for long periods may contribute to stiffness and discomfort.

Current clinical guidelines encourage regular movement breaks and staying physically active as part of maintaining spinal health.

Small changesโ€”like standing up every 30โ€“60 minutes or taking a short walkโ€”can make a meaningful difference over time.

If you're struggling with persistent back pain, we'd love to help you move with confidence.

Back pain rarely has a single cause. Instead, it often develops due to a combination of physical, lifestyle, and psychological factors.

Understanding these contributors is the first step toward managing and preventing future episodes.

A Biokinetics assessment can help identify the factors that may be contributing to your pain and guide an individualized exercise programme.

Lower back pain is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, but the good news is that most episodes are not caused by serious injury and can improve with the right management.

Many factors can contribute to back pain, including prolonged sitting, inactivity, sudden changes in activity levels and stress.

Research consistently shows that, for most people, staying active and participating in an appropriate exercise programmes can help reduce pain and improve function.

Throughout July, we'll be sharing evidence-based tips, exercises, and advice to help you understand your back and keep it healthy.

If you're experiencing persistent back pain or stiffness, we'd love to help.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Do you spend hours looking at a screen, working at a desk, or scrolling on your phone?

Forward head posture and rounded shoulders have become increasingly common and can place extra stress on the neck, shoulders, and upper back.

Over time, this may contribute to:
โœ” Neck pain and stiffness
โœ” Tension headaches
โœ” Upper back discomfort
โœ” Reduced shoulder mobility
โœ” Muscle imbalances

The good news? Small changes in your daily habits, combined with the right exercises, can make a significant difference.

Take a moment today to check your posture:
๐Ÿ‘‚ Is your ear aligned with your shoulder when viewed from the side?
๐Ÿค” Are your shoulders rolling forward?

Awareness is the first step toward improvement.

Good posture is more than just standing up straight.

Posture refers to the alignment of your body when sitting, standing, walking, and moving. When your body is properly aligned, your muscles, joints, and ligaments work more efficiently.

๐Ÿ‘ŽPoor posture can lead to:
โœ” Neck and back pain
โœ” Increased muscle tension and fatigue
โœ” Reduced flexibility and mobility
โœ” Headaches
โœ” Poor breathing mechanics

Many people spend hours sitting at desks, looking at phones, or working in positions that place extra stress on the body. Over time, these habits can contribute to discomfort and movement limitations.

๐Ÿ’กSimple tips for better posture:
โ€ข Keep your shoulders relaxed and pulled slightly back.
โ€ข Sit with both feet flat on the floor.
โ€ข Position your screen at eye level.
โ€ข Take movement breaks every 30โ€“60 minutes.
โ€ข Strengthen your core and postural muscles.

Good posture isn't about being perfectโ€”it's about maintaining healthy body alignment that allows you to move and function comfortably.

Small changes today can help prevent pain tomorrow.
