Before โ€œ๐—ณ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฎโ€ was a word in mainstream wellness, before movement teachers had language for why trauma lives in the body, before somatic therapy had a structural explanation - one anatomist was already looking deeper.

Tom Myers spent decades dissecting the human body. Not to find where muscles begin and end - but to trace the continuous threads of connective tissue that run through all of it.

The prevailing model said: muscles work in isolation. The bicep contracts. The hamstring tightens. Each structure is its own unit, with its own job.

Myers looked at the cadaver and saw something else entirely.

He saw lines. Continuous chains of fascia and muscle running from the sole of the foot to the crown of the skull. From the back of the heel to the base of the skull. From the deep front of the body to the outermost layer of skin.

He had seen the same principle in embryology, in movement, in the way the whole body shifts when one small thing changes. Nothing works alone. Everything is connected through a web that doesnโ€™t just hold the body together - it carries its history.

What if chronic pain wasnโ€™t where the problem was - just where it showed up?

What if the tightness in your neck started in your hips? What if your anxiety lived in your diaphragm? What if the bodyโ€™s emotional memories were stored not in the mind - but in the tissue?

He called these pathways Anatomy Trains. A map of the fascial body that changed how thousands of therapists, movement teachers and bodyworkers understood human structure.

The body, in his model, is not just physical. It is a living record. And fascia is the bridge between what happened - and how it feels.

Your body has three types of muscle.

smooth muscleโ€ฆ the kind that works without you asking. lining your organs, your blood vessels, your digestive tract. quietly doing everything.

cardiac muscleโ€ฆ only found in your heart. involuntary, tireless, rhythmic. it doesnโ€™t rest the way the others do.

and then thereโ€™s skeletal muscleโ€ฆ the tissue that moves you through the world. voluntary, responsive, and the one most of us are holding tension in without even realising.

this is where myofascial release lives.
skeletal muscle is wrapped in fasciaโ€ฆ a continuous web of connective tissue that gives shape, support, and glide to everything you do. when that fascia thickens, dehydrates, or holds the residue of old stress and injury, movement becomes effortful. things that should feel easy start to feel stuck.
