At the recent ISPD Congress, we had an incredible panel of professionals come together to engage in meaningful conversations around ADVOCACY and its role in advancing Peritoneal Dialysis and transforming kidney care! 🩺🌏

Prof Nicola Wearne shed light on the importance of adopting a structured approach to advocacy, highlighting how collaboration with the National Department of Health has contributed to advancing and improving current practices and strengthening services.

🤝 When healthcare professionals, policymakers, and strategic partners come together with a shared vision, we create opportunities to influence policy, strengthen healthcare systems, and improve patient outcomes.

This is more than a conversation. It is about building partnerships, shaping policy, breaking barriers, and creating sustainable change in kidney care across South Africa and the African continent.

🌍 Advocacy creates a voice. Collaboration creates change. Together, we advance.

A huge shout-out to our local committees especially the HPCSA for their presence at the past Congress! 🙌🏽🌍🩺

Their presence spoke volumes as it showed us that being part of this prestigious global event matters, and that shaping new areas of influence within the healthcare sector is equally important to them.

Having our regulatory body present in these conversations creates an opportunity for greater collaboration, professional growth, innovation and transformation within healthcare and especially within the evolving field of Peritoneal Dialysis.

We are encouraged by the possibilities that open when regulators, clinicians, nurses, academics and global healthcare leaders come together with one vision: to advance patient care.

Meet the team ‼️

Sr Michelle Booysen is a registered nurse by profession and is passionate about renal nursing. She loves the job and the impact we make in people's lives with the CARE that we are able to provide in a journey that seems new and daunting.

She has been in renal nursing for the past 10 years and have found her calling and purpose in it which is to be able to assist people in regaining their quality of life after a diagnosis of stage 5 kidney failure going onto renal replacement therapy.

She started off in the renal unit in 2013 and as such have progressed to Acutes Manager after a short while. She obtained her post basic diploma in Nephrology Nursing in 2015. This enabled her to take over the PD programme with this portfolio and absolutely loved the job satisfaction and experience that it brought as part of the portfolio.

Thereafter she managed to move on to manage a much bigger renal unit of 80 chronic and 50 acute patients per month with an acute program at 3 different hospitals in the Cape Region including rebuilding their PD program.

In 2020 during the COVID pandemic she ventured off into general nursing and received so much positive feedback from patients regarding their time with her as their PD nurse that she stepped up to the challenge and started off in private practice.

This experience broadened her scope and experience and brought her so much value and fullfillment as a person.

Her experience and knowledge is of great value to us. She hopes to be able to give back her knowledge and experience to the patients she encounters.
