MEC for Health and Wellness, Faith Mazibuko presented the Gauteng Department of Health’s (GDoH) 2025/26 Annual Performance Report at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature today. The report reflects the progress made, the challenges confronting our health system and the interventions underway to improve healthcare for Gauteng residents.

The GDoH continous to put patients first. The province recorded an 86% patient experience of care satisfaction rate in 2025/26. MEC Mazibuko said that the Department continues strengthening patient experience through better monitoring, shorter waiting times, improved communication, cleanliness and responsive frontline services.

Through outreach programme, healthcare is being taken closer to communities, particularly people living in rural areas and informal settlements. Home visits allow the Department to understand people’s health concerns, assess their wellbeing and connect them with the care and support they need.

At the health of it is prevention, which remains at the heart of our approach. Health promotion and wellness programmes were expanded to 108 township areas, reaching more than 290 000 residents, while mobile clinics supported the screening of more than 200 000 learners.

We are strengthening the fight against HIV and TB. Adult viral load suppression reached 81.5%, exceeding the five year target of 75%. Through the 1.1MillionART Campaign, approximately 65% of the 326 000 ART patients identified as out of care were traced or supported towards re engagement.

Gauteng has made important progress in reducing the cancer treatment backlog. By the end of 2025/26, the backlog had been reduced to fewer than 150 patients. Treatment Time Guarantees will strengthen our ability to prioritise patients, monitor waiting periods and hold facilities accountable for delays.

Digital transformation is helping the GDoH build a more efficient and integrated health system. Fifteen hospitals digitised paper based patient files, while electronic registration, queue management and other digital health systems continued to expand.

Our health system depends on a skilled and supported workforce. During 2025/26, 117 emergency medical care students and 1 917 nursing students were in training, while more than 920 employees received bursaries for further study and professional development.

The safety and readiness of our health facilities remain a priority. We are strengthening infrastructure planning, contractor management, maintenance and occupational health and safety compliance to ensure facilities are safe, functional and ready to provide care when patients need it.

The GDoH regressed from an unqualified to a qualified audit opinion for 2025/26, with asset management identified as a major contributor. The MEC noted this is a matter of serious concern and ensure the public that the Department has prioritised stronger asset management, oversight and monitoring, with restoring an improved audit outcome a key priority for 2026/27.

The discussion focused on understanding NCDs, prevention, early screening and the importance of taking charge of our health.

It was an opportunity to take the conversation beyond our hospitals and into the community, reminding listeners that prevention, early detection and healthy lifestyle choices can make a difference.
