❓ "Is Osteopathy only for back pain?"
Many people associate Osteopathy with back pain, but Osteopaths are trained to assess how the body's muscles, joints and other structures work together as part of overall movement and function.
Osteopathy is a regulated allied health profession in South Africa. Osteopaths conduct a comprehensive assessment that may include a patient's medical history, symptoms, posture, movement and physical examination to help determine an appropriate management plan within their scope of practice.
Depending on an individual's needs, an Osteopath may provide manual treatment, prescribe rehabilitative exercises, offer advice on posture and movement, or refer a patient to another healthcare professional when appropriate.
Understanding when to seek professional healthcare advice supports informed healthcare decisions and may contribute to better musculoskeletal health.
In South Africa, only practitioners registered with the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA) may lawfully practise Osteopathy.
