Trans Wellness Project Vision: SOGIE freedom in the rural areas

Mission:
We are a Trans wellness organisation that transforms lives by advancing health, wellness, and equality.

There are many organisations in South Africa, and Africa at large, that are focused on advocacy and lobbying for the human rights of trans people. There is a need for an organisation that provides psychosocial support to trans people and their significant others. While the founder/director was working for a trans human rights organisation and after left the organisation, she experienced that a lot

of trans people were approaching her for psychosocial support. She also notices that before trans people start their medically transitioning process; there is a lot of psychosocial support. Soon after the trans person is on medical treatment or have surgical intervention, the support falls away. Grootte Schuur Hospital is trying to provide this support but due to a lack of personnel and funding, they cannot give enough psychosocial support that trans people need. These were motivational factors that lead to the starting of the organisation. Talks on starting such an organisation started in April 2015 already but papers were only signed in June 2015. The organisation was first named and registered as the Protea Psychosocial Support Project for Transgender People.

The Trans Wellness Project mourns the passing of one of our constituents, Christin Stevens. Christine have been with the organisation since the start of the organisation. She passed away last week Wednesday after a very very short sickness. Christin was an openly transgender woman who resides in Lutzville. She endured a lot of challenges as a transgender woman in her life. She was one that was always full of life and who can make anyone in her company laughs. We send our condolences to her family and close friends. Trans Wellness Project had lost one of our valued constituents.

Christin’s funeral will be this coming Saturday, 2 May in Vredendal. Tran Wellness Project are seeking assistance with transport for our constituents in Matzikama to attend the funeral. Any person or organisation that can assist may reach out to Whitney Booysen @ 0736367470 or [email protected]

May her soul finds peace which the earth could not gave her wherever she is.

Trans Wellness Project as a suprecipient under Gender DynamiX, who is funded by COSPE, who is funded by the European Union held a successful Agenda Elaporation Process with the Q***r Community from Matzikama. The session was held in the Lutzville Community Hall and facilitated by the REActor who is also the founder and executive director of the organisation, Quanita de Gregorio. The session was a great success. As much as it was an emotional process, participants left with courage and hope amidst the challenges and troubles they face in Matzikama.

We are looking for small contributions in the form of money or other resources to started support groups in Lutzville West, Lutzville Uitkyk, Vredendal North, Klawer, and Vanrhynsdorp. If any one see to invest in such important work please reach out to Quanita @0736367470 or email [email protected]

Thank you.

Transgender people in rural areas were always invisible. They are not found in research and tertiary education sectors. They face harassment and discrimination in primary and secondary education sectors. They are refused services at public health care services. They cannot acces Act49 at Deoartment of Home Affairs.

Transgender awareness is not done if rural transgender people are not part of the awareness or supported by other organisations and funders to access these services without facing harassment or by financial assistance to further their education to have opportunities for jobs or start businesses.

This is Transgender Awareness Week. As an organisation we want to make people aware of the needs of transgender people in rural areas. The Trans Wellness Project (TWP) aims to work holistically on issues face by q***r people in the rural areas of South Africa. It is difficult for us to stay true to our vision, our mission, and our strategic plan. Reason is because we do not have funding. We experience that for the past five or more years, our funding proposals keep on being declined by funders without a solid explanation why. Small funding we got, gave such big expectations from funders that do not aligned with the realities of the rural q***r community. For example, q***r people in rural areas are the highest in unemployment. They go for weeks and months on not having something to eat and struggle here and there just for a slice of bread. Funders expect us to fill in a whole human rights violation or emergency case document before we can assist with food. What case? Where is the human right violation if nothing happened to the person? The person is unemployed, stays alone, have no family or theres no family support. Community members get tired of the person who keeps on begging for food by them.

Funders, can we change our strategies and our expectations in our funding criteria? Can we sit around the table and discuss this? Organisations that have other organisations as sub-recipients, can we all write the proposal together before you submit it to the big funder and before you come and force us to do things that YOU promised the funder without consulting us first. Also, why is there so much expectations around the little bit of money you gave us. You hardly gave us half a million but you expect work relevant to a million rands. Can we PLEASE stop beaucracy and capitalism in NGO work.

Older trans specific, trans-led and broader LGBTIQA organisations, can we form partnerships that benefits both and not partnerships where you act is our bosses. And oooooooooohhhhhhh yes, trans specific organisations, how do you employ cisgender gay men and cisgender le***an women to make decisions on transgender people. Those are the most transphobic people. Can we discuss this as well please.

While it is Transgender Awareness Week, can we make people aware of the realities on the ground please. Yes; let’s concentrate on the highlights of our work but let’s explain what and who brought us there.

TWP is fine to not get support if support brings us more emotional and psychological breakdowns. We are fine not getting support if it means you want to boss us around and not partner with us. We are fine if you badmouth us by funders cause we did not bend over for you.

Let’s start having open and honest conversations.
