🇿🇦 Youth Day reminds us of the courage, sacrifice and powerful voice of South Africa’s young people.

On 16 June, we honour the students of 1976 and reflect on the role of youth in shaping a more just, hopeful and united future.

Today is not only a day of remembrance, it is a day to recognise the dreams, leadership and potential of the next generation.

May we continue to listen, uplift and invest in our young people, because they carry the vision of tomorrow.

From Dr Dean van der Westhuizen, we wish our community a meaningful Youth Day.

We tried.
We really did.

We took the photo to the slit lamp.
We checked it with the OCT.
We even gave it the Optos treatment.

But here’s the truth: while a photo can sometimes give us a clue, it cannot replace a proper eye examination.

Your eyes need more than a quick screenshot , they need specialised testing, magnification, imaging, and a full clinical assessment.

So yes, you can send us a message…
But to properly check your vision and eye health, you’ll still need to book an appointment.

The macula is the tiny part of your retina responsible for sharp, central vision.
When a hole forms, straight lines may look bent or distorted, and central vision may blur.

The good news? Modern surgery can repair most macular holes and restore clear sight.

People with diabetes often develop cataracts earlier. Regular eye exams are vital to catch changes early.

Ever wondered what all the machines in an eye practice actually do?

Welcome to the first episode of “What’s That Machine?”

Today we’re looking at the Heidelberg OCT, one of the most useful imaging devices in our practice.

It allows us to take detailed cross-sectional scans of the retina and optic nerve, helping us detect and monitor conditions such as:

• Macular degeneration
• Diabetic eye disease
• Glaucoma
• Macular holes
• Epiretinal membranes
• Fluid or swelling at the back of the eye

Think of it as a high-resolution scan that helps us see the layers of the eye in incredible detail, often before changes are obvious on examination alone.

Modern eye care is not just about looking at the eye. It is about measuring, monitoring, comparing, and making better decisions for each patient.

Follow along as we explain the technology behind the practice, one machine at a time.

Cataract surgery is virtually painless. You’ll be under local anaesthetic and feel little to no pain. Most say, “It was easier than I expected!”

The oil price went up. Our team adapted.
New transport policy. No complaints. Slight helmet hair.
We might look a little different on the way in, but once we're here, it's business as usual. Your eyes are in safe hands.
