👁️ Cataracts: Separating Myth from Reality

❌ Myth: Cataracts are a “film” that grows over the eye.
✅ Fact: A cataract is a natural clouding of the lens inside the eye, not a layer on the surface.

❌ Myth: Only older people get cataracts.
✅ Fact: Although cataracts are more common with age, they can also occur earlier due to diabetes, injury, inflammation or certain medications.

❌ Myth: Cataracts must be “ripe” before surgery.
✅ Fact: Surgery is recommended when vision starts interfering with daily activities—not based on how advanced the cataract appears.

✨ Good news: Cataract surgery is typically painless, quick and has a short recovery period. Many patients notice clearer vision within days. It is a safe and highly effective procedure that can significantly improve vision and quality of life.

If you're experiencing blurry vision, glare, or difficulty seeing at night, it may be time for a comprehensive eye examination.

Seeing floaters in your vision? 👁️

Floaters are small spots, cobwebs, or shadows that drift across your field of vision and are often a normal part of ageing. However, if you notice new or a sudden increase in floaters, flashes of light, or a curtain-like shadow over your vision, seek urgent eye care as these may be signs of a retinal tear or detachment. Early assessment and treatment can help protect your sight. If you are concerned about any changes in your vision, book an eye examination as soon as possible.

Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” 👁️

It’s a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often associated with increased pressure inside the eye.

It typically develops gradually and may not present noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Vision loss usually begins in the peripheral (side) vision and can progress if left untreated.

Early detection through regular eye examinations is essential to help preserve vision.

25 April 2026 • 100km through the Drakensberg 🏔️

On the 25th of April, Dr Morgan Hayes completed one of South Africa’s toughest ultra trail runs- covering 100km through the demanding Drakensberg terrain in just over 20 hours.

Through altitude, relentless climbs, technical trails, and changing conditions, this was more than just a race. It was patience, resilience, discipline, and the ability to keep going long after the excitement fades.

Because sometimes the biggest challenge isn’t the mountain ahead of you - it’s convincing yourself not to stop.

An incredible achievement and one we’re all extremely proud of 👏

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of vision loss worldwide, especially in adults over 50. It affects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision needed for everyday tasks like reading, driving, and recognising faces.

Early stages may go unnoticed, but as it progresses, you may experience blurred vision or dark, distorted spots in the centre of your sight.

Regular eye tests are key to early detection and protecting your vision.

📍 Don’t wait for symptoms, book your eye test today.
