🌸🌼 HELLO SPRING! 🌼🌸

Spring has officially sprung at Huis Zonnekus, and what better way to welcome the season than with colour, laughter, delicious food and a little friendly competition! πŸ’πŸŒˆ

A HUGE thank you to Feedem for treating our residents to a delicious lunch and helping us transform our dining hall into a bright and colourful celebration of spring. πŸŒ·πŸ½οΈπŸ’›

We challenged our residents to β€œDress for Spring” in their brightest, most colourful outfitsβ€”and although it might not feel like spring, some certainly didn’t disappoint! πŸŒΊπŸ‘—πŸ•Ί

πŸ† Congratulations to our two fabulous winners, Denise Rogers and Florence Curtis! πŸ†

Both ladies thought outside the box and truly embraced the spirit of the day. The smiles on their faces when their names were called were absolutely priceless! 😍❀️

But days like these are about so much more than prizes. Social interaction, laughter, music, dressing up and simply having fun together are so important for our residents. They create a sense of belonging, purpose and connection, while lifting the spirit and bringing joy to everyday life.

Moments of happiness like these nourish the mind, body and soul and remind us that age should never stand in the way of having fun, making memories and celebrating life! πŸŒΈπŸ’ƒπŸŽ‰

Here’s to a colourful spring filled with sunshine, smiles and many more beautiful memories! β˜€οΈπŸŒ·

🌿 Shaping the Future of Quality Care at Huis Zonnekus

Huis Zonnekus was honoured to take part in an inspiring research initiative led by postgraduate students from the Department of Industrial Psychology at Stellenbosch University, exploring the circumstances and functioning of residential care homes.

The research looks at an important question: What enables residential care homes to function well and sustainably, especially in a time of limited resources and increasing demands on the sector?

The purpose of the study is not to assess or evaluate any particular home, manager, staff member or service. Instead, it aims to gain a broader understanding of what contributes to successful functioning and, ultimately, to develop a practical performance model that can assist residential care homes in navigating the future.

The research team consists of Francois van der Bank, Amika Rix, Hannah Laskey and Lukhanyo Magengelele from the Department of Industrial Psychology at Stellenbosch University.

πŸ’™ One of the highlights for us was the brainstorming session. It was wonderful to share ideas, perspectives and visions for the future of Huis Zonnekus. What made the session especially meaningful was seeing how closely our ideas aligned β€” demonstrating that, as a team, we share the same vision for Huis Zonnekus and the future we want to build for our residents.

We believe that meaningful conversations, collaboration and a willingness to look towards the future are essential in ensuring that we continue to provide a home where our residents feel valued, respected, cared for and, most importantly, at home. πŸ‘πŸ’™

We are truly grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this important conversation around the sustainability and future of residential care and to play our small part in shaping better care for older persons.

🌱 Together, we can continue to grow, learn and build a sustainable future where every older person receives the dignity, compassion and quality care they deserve.

Dementia isn't a single condition. It's an umbrella term for a range of symptoms caused by different diseases that affect the brain in different ways.

Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies and frontotemporal dementia are among the most common types of dementia. Because they each affect different parts of the brain, the symptoms can vary from person to person.

While memory problems are often associated with dementia, some people may experience changes in thinking, language, behaviour, concentration, movement or perception.

This guide highlights some symptoms linked to different types of dementia, but it’s also important to remember that no two people experience dementia in the same way.

By understanding the different signs of dementia, including those that are less well known, we can help more people recognise changes early and access a diagnosis and support sooner.

[Image description:
A graphic split into four different sections illustrates common symptoms associated with Vascular dementia, Alzheimer's disease, Dementia with Lewy bodies and Frontotemporal dementia. From top left to bottom right:

This is surrounded by text reading, 'Problems planning and organising; Short periods of sudden confusion; Slower speed of thought; Problems concentrating; Trouble following a series of steps; Problems with memory and language.' Each piece of text is accompanied by a graphic illustrating the symptom.

Central text reads, 'Dementia with Lewy bodies.' This is surrounded by text reading, 'Tremors; Depression and anxiety; Hallucinations; Swinging between alertness and sleepiness; Trouble concentrating; Difficulties with walking and movement.'
