THE BURIED PIONEERS — #2

The man who tested 14,000 patients and proved the diabetes epidemic was a lie of omission.

Subject: Dr. Joseph R. Kraft, MD (1921–2017)

Crime: Proving that by the time you are diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, you have already been sick for 20 years.

If you go to your doctor tomorrow and your fasting blood sugar is 5.2 mmol/L (93 mg/dL), they will smile, pat you on the shoulder, and tell you that your metabolism is perfect.

If your HbA1c is 5.4%, they will tell you to keep doing what you’re doing.

And according to Dr. Joseph Kraft, they might be sending you home to die.

Kraft was not a rebel looking for a fight. He was the Chairman of Clinical Pathology at St. Joseph Hospital in Chicago for 35 years. He was a man of microscopes, data, and irrefutable evidence. Over his career, he performed something no one else had the patience to do: 14,384 oral glucose tolerance tests, lasting up to five hours each, where he didn’t just measure glucose.

He measured insulin.

And what he found in those 14,000 vials of blood should have changed the trajectory of modern medicine forever. Instead, it was buried.

The Illusion of "Normal"

Kraft discovered a terrifying truth: Hyperinsulinemia precedes hyperglycemia.

High insulin comes before high blood sugar. Not by a few weeks. Not by a few months. But by one to two decades.

When you eat the standard modern diet, your body produces insulin to shove the glucose into your cells. Over time, your cells get full (the Overflow Model). They resist. So your pancreas pumps out more insulin to force the sugar in.

For years, this massive surge of insulin works. It successfully keeps your blood sugar "normal."

And because your doctor only tests your blood sugar, they tell you you are fine. But beneath the surface, your insulin levels are screaming. Your arteries are inflaming. Your liver is packing itself with fat.

Kraft called this "Diabetes In-Situ" — diabetes hiding in plain sight.

The Damning Numbers

When Kraft looked at his database of 14,000 patients, the numbers were an indictment of the entire medical system:

• Of the people who passed the standard fasting glucose test (labeled "normal"), 76% actually failed the insulin assay. They were already diabetic at the cellular level.

• Even among those who passed the grueling Oral Glucose Tolerance Test, 75% still failed the insulin assay.

Let that sink in. The tests your doctor relies on to tell you that you are "safe" miss up to 75% of the people who are actively developing the disease.

By the time your pancreas finally exhausts itself and your blood sugar actually rises high enough to be diagnosed as "Type 2 Diabetes," the war is already in its final stages. You haven't "just developed" diabetes. You've had it for 20 years.

The Vascular Truth

Kraft didn't stop there. As a pathologist, he performed thousands of autopsies. He looked inside the arteries of people who died of heart attacks and strokes.

His ultimate conclusion is one of the most powerful statements in medical history: "Those with cardiovascular disease not identified with diabetes… are simply undiagnosed."

Read that again. Heart disease IS metabolic disease. It is the vascular manifestation of decades of hyperinsulinemia.

Why Was He Ignored?

Why don't we run Kraft's 5-hour insulin assay today?

Why does your doctor still only check your fasting glucose and HbA1c?

Because if the medical establishment accepted Kraft’s data, two things would happen immediately:

1 The diabetes epidemic would instantly triple in size. Millions of "healthy" people would suddenly be classified as metabolically sick.

2 The treatment protocol would have to change. You cannot treat hyperinsulinemia with drugs that increase insulin (which is what many diabetes drugs do). You can only treat it by lowering insulin through diet, fasting, and lifestyle.

There is no pharmaceutical patent for fasting. There is no billion-dollar industry in telling people to stop eating the food that makes them sick.

So Kraft’s 14,000 tests were quietly ignored. He published his book, Diabetes Epidemic & You, in 2008. He died in 2017 at the age of 95, knowing the truth, while the world continued to test the wrong marker, prescribe the wrong drugs, and watch the amputations and heart attacks multiply.

The Takeaway

Your fasting blood sugar is a late-stage lagging indicator. It is the smoke alarm going off after the house has already burned down.

If you want to know the truth about your metabolic health, demand a Fasting Insulin test.

Dr. Joseph Kraft spent his life proving that the body whispers before it screams. We are simply listening to the wrong voice.

Before Insulin… A Doctor Removed Sugar Completely
No moderation. No balance.
Just one radical change… and measurable results.

There’s a part of medical history that almost feels too uncomfortable to revisit.

Not because it didn’t work…

But because of how simple the core idea was.

Back in the late 1800s, before insulin existed, before anyone could check blood sugar in real time…

A physician named Cantani decided to remove variables.

Not tweak them.

Remove them.

He didn’t trust “moderation.”
He didn’t believe in partial measures.

So he created a controlled environment where patients had no access to the foods that were quietly driving their condition.

No sugar.
No bread.
No starch.

Not reduced.

Gone.

What replaced it was just as simple.

Meat.
Fat.
Water.

Nothing engineered. Nothing processed. Nothing disguised.

And then something started to happen that was hard to ignore.

The sugar that had been spilling into their urine… began to disappear.

Symptoms eased.

Not overnight miracles.
But steady, observable change.

At a time when medicine had very few answers, he documented everything.

Hundreds of pages.
Careful observations.
Patterns that repeated across patients.

And what stood out wasn’t a new treatment.

It was the removal of something.

That’s the part that still lingers.

Because even now, with all the advancements, all the technology, all the modern frameworks…

The same pattern shows up again and again.

Take away the inputs that destabilize the system…
and the system often begins to stabilize itself.

Cantani’s methods would never pass today’s standards.

Too rigid. Too controlled. Too absolute.

But the signal inside the noise?

That’s harder to dismiss.

This wasn’t a trend.
It wasn’t a diet movement.

It was observation.

And it happened long before most of today’s conversations even began.

Which leaves a quiet question sitting in the background…

Not about history.

About right now.

What actually changes…
when sugar is no longer part of the equation?

B12 deficiency mimics depression. Iron deficiency mimics anxiety. Vitamin D deficiency mimics fatigue. Magnesium deficiency mimics insomnia. Thyroid dysfunction mimics everything. Before you accept a diagnosis, test your nutrients. You might just be deficient.

Those who listened to my interview on Monday evening at 6:30pm Alfred Nzo Community Radio News will remember this is exactly what I spoke about. Please read up, ask me where you don’t understand- make plans to see me;

METFORMIN, VITAMIN B1, B12 DEFICIENCY

This drug you are seeing above is called Metformin.

It is a drug from the class called Biguanides. Biguanides are a type of oral antidiabetic drug that work by:

1. Decreasing glucose production in the liver
2. Increasing insulin sensitivity in the body
3. Delaying gastric emptying and reducing glucose absorption

Through these mechanism of actions, it help control blood sugar . It a good thing right? Yeah but not entirely. If you swallow this for few weeks it helps and the you are back to normal .

But unfortunately in a case where the root cause is still the same, the drug is ineffective. Not only is it ineffective but comes with other side effects which is the reason for this post.

Remember my favourite quote by Hippocrates that say "He who take medicine must recover twice, once from the disease and once from the side effects of the medicine 💊?

METFORMIN and BITAMIN B12.

Metformin depletes vitamin B12, and vitamin B1. Deficiency of vitamin B12 can result in tingling of the hand and numbness of the feet.

So for diabetics, sometimes the neuropathy is the complication of the disease or the side effect of the medication, in this case metformin.

Risk factors to metformin’s effect on Vitamin B12 and B1 includes:

- Taking higher doses

- Taking the medication for longer duration (more than 2months)

- One who is already predisposed to vitamin B12 and/or B1 deficiency by virtue of diet or lifestyle eg vegan diet.

Once you’re taking metformin and you start noticing tingling sensation in your hands and feet, there’s a chance your vitamin B12 and B1 stores are low and it’s bad. Very bad.

Let me tell you why it’s bad:

First, let me officially introduce you to vitamin B12 and the role it plays in the body. Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, is an essential water-soluble vitamin that plays a crucial role in various bodily functions.

It is a member of the B-vitamin family and is required for the production of red blood cells, DNA synthesis, and the proper functioning of the nervous system. Vitamin B12 plays a major role in providing cofactors that are required to form myelin sheath which covers the brain. Lets visit the land of myelin. In the body, there’s something known as the “myelin sheath”.

Myelin is an insulating layer, or sheath that forms around nerves, including those in the brain and spinal cord. It is made up of protein and fatty substances. This myelin sheath allows electrical impulses to transmit quickly and efficiently along the nerve cells.

Once there’s problems with the myelin sheets (eg the myelin sheath is damaged), nerves do not conduct electrical impulses normally. Meaning, there can be numbness, vision loss, loss of memory if it's in the brain etc., as the electrical impulses which are like the messages cannot be transmitted anymore due to damage to the myelin sheet.

(Now that you know what myelin sheet is, we can move ahead, this information has a role to play in what we would later learn.)

The signs and symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency as learnt above includes:

Loss of skin sensation, loss of awareness and balance (proprioception), abnormal reflexes, diminished vibratory sensation, loss of vision, etc. These all can be easily mistaken for those of diabetic neuropathy.

So due to this deficiency in Vitamin B12, complicated by Metformin it causes dementia. Dementia is a progressive conditions that affect memory. In terms of numbers there is more than 60% chance of having dementia if you have diabetes

There is 10-20% chance of developing dementia if you have Vitamin B12 deficiency .I am sure you can do the remaining maths.

Take home message : Fix your diet. Drugs will not fix your health. Chronic disease like diabetes is fixed in the kitchen not in the pharmacy. Drugs put your on a path of self destruction.

This is so true

This is so true

Health isn’t punishment, it’s physiology.

We’ve been taught that change takes time. That healing is slow. But the truth is, your biology responds to every choice you make almost instantly. You are one walk, one meal, one deep breath away from shifting the entire chemistry of your body.

A single nutrient-dense meal can begin to reprogram your gene expression, flipping on the genes that promote healing and turning off the ones that drive inflammation and disease.

Go for a walk, and you boost levels of BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), a compound that helps your brain grow, adapt, and protect itself against aging.

Take a few deep, slow breaths and your vagus nerve kicks in, activating your parasympathetic nervous system, lowering cortisol, and shifting you out of stress mode and into repair mode.

These aren’t abstract ideas. They’re real-time biological events. And they add up.

Everything you’re exposed to over the course of your life, from diet to stress to toxins shapes your health more than your genes ever will. That means you’re not at the mercy of your DNA.

You are the CEO of your own health.
