In this next clip from ๐๐ฎ๐ฎ๐๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฏ๐ ๐ฅ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป on kykNET and DStv, BWC Executive Officer Chad Cupido raises an uncomfortable but necessary question:
When people choose to buy homes in areas where baboons have long lived and moved through the landscape, what responsibility do humans have to protect their homes without harming the animals?
Places such as Simonโs Town and Kommetjie are not only residential areas. They exist alongside natural spaces and known baboon ranges.
Current property listing data places the average property value in Kommetjie at over
Yet when baboon-proofing, secure waste systems or preventative measures are discussed, the cost is sometimes treated as an unreasonable burden, while the baboons are treated as the problem.
That requires honest reflection.
People have every right to protect their homes, their dogs, their families and their property. BWC does not dismiss those concerns.
But choosing to live alongside wildlife must also carry responsibility.
Official baboon-management guidance has long recognised that residents living near natural areas and baboon home ranges need to take preventative measures. This includes secure waste management, baboon-proof bins, protecting food sources and improving household and community-level deterrents.
That responsibility cannot rest only with individual homeowners. Authorities must also provide proper infrastructure, waste management, education, humane management and meaningful protection for baboons.
But one principle must be clear:

The tenderness Ruben shared about Cindy reminded us of something deeply important: baboons are not faceless intruders. They are intelligent, emotional and socially complex beings capable of trust, attachment and connection.
Perhaps instead of asking only, โHow do we keep them away from us?โ we should also be asking:
Baboons belong in the Cape Peninsula landscape.
Coexistence requires responsibility.
Cruelty is never the solution.
