My Journey into the Medicine of Sound - a reflection 🐚
Since I can remember, sound has always been a key element of my practice. As I child, nature was my playmate and most of the time I would spend my days simply lying on the grass in our garden listening to her sounds - the song of the wind through the trees, the hum of bees, the chorus of crickets. Sometimes I would sing with her, sometimes just listen 🤍
Then as a doctor, I experienced this too, this time noticing the lack of intentional sound in hospital rooms - the loud beeping of machines, muffled coughs and sometimes gentle sobs of patients creating a soundscape that matched the harsh fluroscent lighting and sterile aesthetic…sound that was anything but healing.
During my shifts and my calls, I listened to ocean or rain sounds, whale song or classical music to try to create my own bubble within the chaos and I was always amazed at how hearing these sounds through my headphones seemed to change the energy of the world around me as I listened…
And then when I begun teaching yoga and guiding meditation, music became a huge part of how I curated my classes and held space, with my playlists often feeling more important than the exact of sequence poses I was teaching.
And now, this year, I find myself delving into this world of sound even more intentionally - weaving together instruments from around the world with tones at specific frequencies to bring about deeper healing in my sessions & learning to use my voice - not just through talk and guidance - but also song, mantra and melody too.
And I’m not sure exactly what is happening…but something in me is unlocking, remembering and coming home 🐚
The more courage I have to improvise and share, the deeper I fall in love with the medicine of sound and so even though sometimes my voice cracks or I play an incorrect key…and even though oftentimes when I first play a new instrument it sounds like a toddler producing mix matched sounds, I’m allowing myself to be curious about this new world I am discovering and giving myself the grace to experience the new, while I celebrate the joy that comes with being a student all over again 🥰
