On 8 October, Lima attended the VoiceOut Deaf Event at Randwest Agripark in Rand West City, which brought together farmers, organisations and stakeholders to discuss Deaf awareness and disability-inclusive agriculture.

The event included discussions on accessibility in farming, sign language and communication in agricultural spaces, as well as demonstrations of adaptive farming equipment and technologies to support farmers with disabilities.

Lima supports Deaf farmers through the Gold Fields South Deep Mine Host Communities farm enterprise projects. The project assists farmers with access to land, market and input linkages, agricultural business support and training.

Creating a more inclusive agricultural sector means ensuring that farmers with disabilities can access the resources, skills and opportunities they need to develop their farming enterprises.

Our Social Employment Fund (SEF) Enterprise Development participants were recently invited by the North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) to attend its Women in Business Workshop in Mahikeng.

The workshop focused on both the woman and the business, creating space to talk about mental health, burnout, imposter syndrome and the pressures that come with running a business.

With Mental Health Awareness Month underway, the Department of Health also addressed cervical cancer, highlighting the importance of screening and early detection, a reminder that looking after your own health matters too.

The day then turned to the practical side of entrepreneurship, with experts sharing guidance on:

• Credit compliance and protecting your business – NCR
• Tax compliance – SARS
• Standards and getting products ready for larger markets – SABS
• Wills, estates and legal matters – Master of the High Court
• Business funding and what makes a business fundable – Standard Bank

For our participants, it was an opportunity to gain practical knowledge, ask questions and connect with other women in business.

We are proud to see our SEF participants making use of opportunities like these to learn, connect and grow their businesses.

Kgalalelo Farming | North West Farmers

For Katlego Ntshabele and Josia Rangwako, farming is more than a source of income; it is an opportunity to build a sustainable enterprise.

Based in Moruleng village, Moses Kotane Municipality in the North West, Kgalalelo Farming started producing a range of vegetables, including spinach, cabbage, tomatoes and green peppers. The two farmers were committed to expanding their operation and were willing to adopt improved agricultural practices to increase production and profitability.

Through the Township Economy Programme (TEP), funded by Tshikululu Social Investments and made possible by Valterra Platinum, Lima provided technical support and production inputs to strengthen their farming operation.

Support included drip-line irrigation, two 5,000-litre JoJo tanks with stands, seedlings, fertiliser, agrochemicals and a knapsack sprayer. Lima continues to provide technical guidance to help ensure that best agricultural practices are followed across their available 5 hectares.

Today, the farm is fully planted with cabbage and spinach, with the farmers applying the knowledge and support they have received to strengthen their production.

During a recent visit, Lima facilitator Marvin Matseke met with Katlego and Josia as they prepared bunches of spinach for market. For Katlego, seeing their produce ready to be sold was an important milestone in their farming journey.

A lot can happen in 10 months. Here’s what Round 4 of the Social Employment Fund (SEF) made possible!

From October 2025 to July 2026, Lima worked alongside communities to support health and social services, food security, smallholder farmers, enterprise development, early childhood development and education, and gender-based violence awareness

Some of the highlights:

𝟱,𝟬𝟲𝟳 household gardens established
𝟮𝟬𝟳 community gardens established
𝟲𝟭,𝟰𝟰𝟯 visits to vulnerable households
𝟰𝟯,𝟳𝟯𝟭 vulnerability surveys completed
𝟱,𝟲𝟵𝟮 beneficiaries reached through maternal and child health services
𝟭𝟬,𝟬𝟰𝟳 beneficiaries supported through health and social services
𝟯𝟮𝟴 participants trained through enterprise development programmes
𝟮𝟳𝟭 ECD facilities supported
𝟱𝟲𝟱 GBV group discussions held

Several targets were exceeded, bringing practical support, knowledge and opportunities directly into communities.

Beyond the numbers, SEF created opportunities for young people to build skills while making a meaningful contribution in their own communities, supporting families, strengthening food security, promoting early learning and connecting people to essential services.

Thank you to our partners, participants and community members who helped make this possible.

And now, we look forward to SEF Round 5, continuing the work and building on what we have achieved together!

Molemi Greens- North West Farmer

At 78 years old, Josias Molemi continues to farm with passion and determination.

A backyard farmer from Sepeding section in Sandfontein, Moses Kotane Municipality, Mr Molemi previously struggled to produce healthy, harvestable cabbage, with pests damaging his crops.

Through the Township Economy Programme (TEP), funded by Tshikululu Social Investments Trust and made possible by Valterra Platinum, Lima provided infrastructure, production inputs and ongoing agricultural support to strengthen his farming operation.

Support included a borehole and pump, JoJo tanks, generator, drip-line irrigation, seedlings, fertiliser, agrochemicals and a knapsack sprayer.

But the support went beyond inputs. Through regular farm visits and practical demonstrations, Lima facilitator Marvin Matseke and Agriculturalist Mida Serothoane have helped Mr Molemi develop his skills in pest scouting, crop protection, spraying and fertilisation.

Today, his backyard is planted with healthy spinach and cabbage, and he is preparing additional land to expand his farm.

By combining the right resources with knowledge and technical support, farmers can build the confidence and skills to improve production and grow their enterprises.

Mr Molemi summed up the impact during a recent visit, “I was never going to plant cabbage again if Lima and Valterra did not come forward to rescue me.”

In celebration of International Literacy Day, our Lima Social Employment Fund (SEF) team visited a local Early Learning Centre in Sheila Village, Ditsobotla Local Municipality, North West, for a special book-reading session with the children.

The session was led by the ELC principal, who read The Best Thing Ever and beautifully translated the story into Setswana as she read.

This helped the children connect with the story in their mother tongue, while also introducing them to English vocabulary and encouraging confidence in using both languages.

It was a joyful and meaningful day that highlighted the importance of early literacy, mother-tongue learning, and fostering a love for reading from a young age.

Social Employment Fund (SEF) Participant Spotlight: Crucial Thandolwethu Mabila

I am Crucial Thandolwethu Mabila from KamaQhekeza in Nkomazi. After completing my matric at Mehlobovu Secondary School, I studied Advanced Animal Science/Animal Production at the University of Mpumalanga, graduating in 2023.

In 2024, I ventured into entrepreneurship by starting my own sneaker-washing business. I also registered on the Lima database and participated in training sessions facilitated by Snqobile Zondo, focusing on financial literacy, gender-based violence, labour law and organic farming.

In October 2025, I was fortunate to participate in the Lima/SEF Programme as a supervisor in the agricultural component under Nkomazi Municipality. My primary focus is on food security, overseeing community and household gardens to grow food for vulnerable communities, including households, ECD centres, the elderly and individuals with disabilities.

Despite starting with no experience in crop farming, the training and mentorship I received from Snqobile Zondo were invaluable. Through my hard work as a team leader, my efforts were recognised by a government official from the Department of Social Development, who supported me in establishing my own garden/farm.

On 3 August 2026, I received essential equipment which will enable me to kickstart my garden/farm, aimed at producing food for my family, generating income and creating job opportunities for young people in my community.

My goal is to leverage my education, experience and resources to develop a successful agricultural project that will benefit my community. I am deeply grateful to Lima for enabling me to work on the SEF Programme; without them, I might not have gained such recognition.

As we celebrate Women's Month, we spotlight Francina Modise from Mantserre, a woman who chose resilience over giving up.

Francina started sewing in 2003. In 2017 she was part of a cooperative of 10 women. When the cooperative separated, she took her work home and continued alone from her sitting room.

Over the years she expanded her skills and now specializes in couch covers and church wear. The challenges she faces working from home are:
- Operational finance
- Shortage of sewing machines
- Record keeping

Through Lima RDF and the Street Business School (SBS) Programme, funded by Tshikululu Social Investments and made possible by Valterra Platinum, Francina completed all 8 modules in business management and record keeping basics for street businesses.

She says the training taught her that business needs patience, and that meeting other small businesses was one of the best parts of the journey.

With additional financial literacy training from FNB, she now understands the importance of separating personal and business expenses.

Her advice to other women:
"Ageing is not a disability or a reason to give up. Stand up and continue to inspire young women to start their own small businesses. Start small and engage other organizations for assistance”.

We celebrate you, Francina. Lead by example. Never give up.
May your story inspire other women to start where they are.
