🚁 Two simultaneous maritime medical evacuations. Two rescue platforms. One coordinated response.

On 22 June 2026, the GMSRS Emergency Operations Centre successfully coordinated two separate maritime medical evacuations off the coast of Cape Town at the same time.

With one patient evacuated by helicopter from a vessel offshore and another rescued by launch vessel from a ship at anchorage due to adverse weather conditions, the operation showcased the flexibility of our multi-asset maritime medical response capability.

These concurrent missions highlight the importance of coordinated planning, experienced medical rescue teams, and strong partnerships in delivering critical care to seafarers when every minute counts.

A great example of what can be achieved when maritime, aviation, pre-hospital and hospital teams work together towards a common goal.

Thank you to the team at Life Entabeni Hospital and everyone involved in this mission. Most importantly, we're pleased to hear the patient is recovering well.

Search and Rescue Operation – 80 Nautical Miles South of Mossel Bay

In the early hours of 01 March 2026, Global Medical Safety & Risk Solutions (GMSRS), through our Medevac Africa division, was activated by MRCC Cape Town to assist in a maritime search and rescue operation involving the tug LEO.

The crew of 18 had been forced to abandon the vessel after it took on water and later sank. Vessels in the vicinity began responding to the distress, with additional support coordinated through MRCC.

Together with our aviation partners, Cape Town Helicopters and Cape Town Aviation, we placed aerial assets on standby, including fixed-wing aircraft which were deployed to support search efforts and on-scene coordination.

Despite challenging conditions, 12 survivors were rescued, 1 individual was recovered deceased, and 5 remain unaccounted for.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to all those affected and thank every agency, crew, and vessel involved in this multi-agency effort.

Special thanks to MRCC, the South African Weather Service (SAWS), Flight Information Services (FIS), and all maritime responders.

Today, as Cape Town experienced temperatures above 40Β°C, a GMSRS Site-Based Medic based at the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company responded to a serious heat-related emergency on Platteklip Gorge.

Although the incident fell outside our official site responsibility, our medic was the closest advanced medical provider and immediately went to assist.

The patient was critically ill and required urgent evacuation. Our Emergency Operations Centre coordinated with Western Cape DOH EMS, who dispatched specialised Wilderness Search and Rescue medics and the Air Mercy Service helicopter.

Thanks to the combined efforts of:
β€’ Western Cape DOH EMS
β€’ Wilderness Search And Rescue WSAR Western Cape
β€’ South African National Parks
β€’ Air Mercy Service (AMS)
β€’ Table Mountain Aerial Cableway

the patient was stabilised and safely extracted from the mountain.

This serves as an important reminder that extreme heat on Table Mountain can quickly become dangerous.

If hiking:
βœ” Start early
βœ” Carry sufficient water
βœ” Monitor conditions
βœ” Know the emergency number 021 937 0300 (Western Cape, South Africa)
