You've probably heard the saying: "The stronger your legs, the longer your lifespan."
There's some interesting science behind the idea - but the reality is a little more nuanced.
Research has found that lower-body strength and physical performance are associated with mortality risk, particularly as we get older.
One simple measure researchers use is the chair-stand test - how efficiently someone can repeatedly stand up from a chair.
Why is that interesting?
Because getting out of a chair, climbing stairs, walking, balancing and getting up from the floor are all everyday movements that require strength and physical capacity.
Strong legs aren't a guarantee of a longer life, and these studies don't prove that leg strength itself causes people to live longer.
But they do highlight something worth paying attention to:
Maintaining strength and physical function is an important part of healthy ageing.
Keep your body capable of doing the things that make life worth living.
