What do I do as a Cancer Coach? How do I work? I get this a lot and I totally understand, it is a deeply complex field.

I use this 'Cancer Causal Landscape' map to describe how I work and all the different moving parts to what cancer is, how it develops in the body, and the possible contributing factors for why it developed in my clients body. Cancer is essentially a failure of multiple systems in the body combined with being overloaded with toxins. We use this information to build a body that is inhospitable to cancer on many different fronts.

I am in the process of creating an online course that explains and covers all of these aspects to make it easy for people to go through it at their own pace and have access to it ongoingly - really looking forward to having that up. If you'd like to be notified when it is done, please comment 'MAP' and I'll add you to my newsletter list so you will be the first to know.

Feel free to share with anyone who can benefit from this.
If you'd like to book a session I work one-on-one online, send me a dm to chat further ❤

🥕 Let's talk about one of nature's most underrated healing foods - the delicious carrot!

Most people think carrots are simply good for eye health, but these yummerlicious root vegetables contain powerful compounds that support immune function, gut health, healthy aging, and may even play a role in cancer prevention (I have to say ‘may’, but I really do believe these play a very important role in cancer healing & cancer prevention protocols - there is loads of anecdotal evidence to this).

Carrots are rich in:
🥕 Beta-carotene
🥕 Alpha-carotene
🥕 Fibre
🥕 Vitamin C
🥕 Potassium
🥕 Falcarinol & Falcarindiol

One of the most exciting compounds is falcarinol, a natural phytochemical that has been studied for its potential anti-inflammatory, cell-protective and anti-cancer properties.

Research suggests carrots may help:

✨ Protect cells from oxidative stress
✨ Support healthy inflammatory balance
✨ Nourish beneficial gut bacteria
✨ Support immune function
✨ Promote overall health and longevity

🧬 Carrots & Cancer Prevention

Studies have found that falcarinol may help regulate abnormal cell growth and support the body's natural defence systems. In animal studies, falcarinol-rich carrots have even been associated with a reduced development of colorectal tumours. It seems that falcarinol is effective against mycobacterium - which are connected to cancer development in the body.

While carrots are not a cancer treatment, they are a beautiful example of how everyday foods can contribute to a healthier internal environment.

Carrots are healthy raw and cooked - raw carrots provide wonderful fibre, while cooking increases the availability of beta-carotene. I also love making carrot juice - combined with ginger, lemon and fennel, it creates a delicious, nourishing and medicinal drink.

Sometimes the most powerful foods aren't exotic superfoods - sometimes they're the every day vegetables you forget about in the bottom drawer of your fridge! And... carrots make great on-the-go snacks :)

Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.

Much love,
Sally

Hi, I'm Sally

For those of you who are new here, I thought it was time I properly introduced myself.

A few years ago, my life looked very different.

I was a professional photographer, running a successful business & fine art business, a single mom, constantly busy, always doing, constantly pushing and striving. In 2017, life threw me a series of challenges that completely turned my world around and altered my path.

Burnout. My mom’s death to cancer. Covid. Then my own diagnosis - aggressive triple negative breast cancer. I endured chemotherapy treatment, multiple surgeries, serious complications and all the fear, uncertainty and loss of identity. Then, a breakup, and my worst nightmare - exactly a year after my treatment ended, on my first annual scan - a recurrence.

What followed was not just a healing journey, but a journey of total, radical transformation.
It led me to ask deeper questions about health, disease, lifestyle, stress, nutrition, toxins, emotional healing, and what it truly means to thrive.

Along the way, I discovered the incredible power of reconnection - through food, nature, lifestyle, mindset, and becoming an active participant in my own health.

Today, I am passionate about helping others do the same.

I am the founder of The Little Leaf Apothecary, a Cancer Coach, speaker, educator, horse lover, nature enthusiast, and lifelong student of holistic health and deep healing through reconnecting to our body, our Self, our communities, our food, our earth.

Most of all, I am someone who believes that our bodies are incredibly intelligent, that prevention matters, and that we have more influence over our health than we've been led to believe.

If you're interested in living with more vitality, resilience and connection to yourself, your food, and the natural world around you, you're in the right place.

I'd love to know...
💚 Where are you joining me from?
💚 What brought you here?
Let me know in the comments below.

Much love,
Sally

What am I excited about currently (besides boswellia - when it comes to plants, there's just so much to get excited about!) and I have added the tincture to my daily health protocol.

SKULLCAP!

Scutellaria Baicalensis (Baikal or Chinese skullcap). I've been reading about it for a while now, specifically for my clients in chemotherapy treatment to protect the body from the damage of chemo (multiple organs are affected by chemo, sometimes for life - heart, lungs, kidneys, liver) so we really do want to provide as much protection as we can.

KEY ACTIVE COMPOUNDS:
The primary bioactives are flavonoids: baicalein, baicalin, wogonin, wogonoside, and oroxylin A. These are responsible for most of the studied anticancer effects.

ANTI-CANCER MECHANISMS (Preclinical):
Research shows multiple mechanisms of action across cancer types:
Apoptosis induction - triggers programmed cell death in tumour cells
Cell cycle arrest - halts cancer cell replication
Anti-metastatic - inhibits tumour migration and invasion
Ferroptosis - a newer finding, particularly in HCC (hepatocellular carcinoma) and colorectal cancer (CRC), where baicalin disrupts iron-mediated oxidative pathways
Downregulation of PI3K/Akt, MAPK, and NFκB signalling pathways- key pathways involved in tumour survival and resistance
It is powerfully effective in inhibiting mycobacterium - a bacteria connected to cancer.
Research has shown that skullcap concentration-dependently inhibited the proliferation of colorectal cancer cell lines, including chemotherapy-resistant cell lines! This is super exciting - especially because colorectal cancer is the #1 killer of men & women combined - chemotherapy alone isn't the answer - we have to create a multi-pronged approach when it comes to cancer treatment.

SYNERGY WITH CHEMOTHERAPY DRUGS:
This is arguably the most clinically interesting area. Studies indicate that S. baicalensis and its bioactives - including baicalein, baicalin, and wogonin - exhibited beneficial synergistic interactions with chemotherapy drugs by enhancing efficacy and sensitivity, with mechanisms associated with strengthening p53-induced DNA damage, inducing autophagy, and downregulating key signalling pathways. However, most findings are preclinical, and clinical implications have yet to be fully investigated.
Specific drugs studied include cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), both commonly used in gastrointestinal and other cancers.

REDUCING CHEMO SIDE EFFECTS:
TCM incorporating S. baicalensis has shown promise in reducing complications from radiotherapy and chemotherapy, improving overall quality of life, extending survival time, and alleviating symptoms such as fatigue, depression, chronic pain, anorexia/cachexia, and insomnia.
There is also older clinical data (Russian studies from 1997) specifically on lung cancer patients, suggesting S. baicalensis dry extract acted as a hemostimulant - supporting blood cell recovery during chemotherapy.

BREAST CANCER:
Baicalin and baicalein from S. baicalensis show anticancer properties through apoptosis induction, cell cycle arrest, and inhibition of metastasis, with synergy noted with chemotherapy agents. However, current evidence is predominantly preclinical, with limited clinical trials to validate safety and efficacy in humans.

IMPORTANT SAFETY & CLINICAL CAVEATS
Drug interactions are two-directional. While synergistic benefits have been reported, S. baicalensis can also affect drug metabolism (CYP enzymes, OATP transporters), which may alter chemo drug levels unpredictably in vivo
-Anticoagulant caution- flavonoids can have mild blood-thinning effects; relevant if the patient is on anticoagulants
Most evidence is still preclinical (cell lines, animal models) - human RCTs are sparse
Quality and standardisation** matter significantly - extracts vary widely in flavonoid concentration

THE BOTTOM LINE:
S. baicalensis is one of the more promising botanicals in integrative oncology, with a plausible mechanistic rationale and some clinical signals - but it's not yet at the level where it can be confidently recommended alongside specific chemo protocols without oncologist involvement. The synergy data is encouraging, particularly around cisplatin and 5-FU, but the drug interaction picture means it needs to be disclosed to the treating oncologist.

IRON - just how much do you need?

Let's talk about IRON - one of the most important minerals in the body... but also one of the most misunderstood, especially if you have been diagnosed with cancer. 🩸

We generally focus on low iron and anemia (which I had as a child and it is awful) - low iron can lead to fatigue, weakness, hair loss, breathlessness and poor concentration.

But what many people don't realise is that iron can also become TOO HIGH - and when it does, it may contribute to inflammation, oxidative stress, cellular damage and more.
Like many things in the body, iron is all about balance. Too little can cause problems. Too much can too.

Iron is essential for:

❤️ Carrying oxygen around the body
❤️ Energy production
❤️ Immune function
❤️ Brain health and cognition
❤️ Healthy muscles and tissues

Without enough iron, our cells simply cannot function optimally. However, iron is also a highly reactive mineral and when it is present in our bodies in excess, it contributes to the production of FREE RADICALS - unstable molecules that can damage cells, proteins, DNA and healthy tissues (and we know that cancer is DNA damage that runs amock).

This process is known as OXIDATIVE STRESS and is one of the reasons researchers are interested in iron balance when investigating chronic disease, aging and cancer.

🧬 Iron and cancer
Cancer cells require nutrients to grow and divide, and iron is one of those nutrients. Research has shown that many cancer cells have an increased demand for iron and often develop mechanisms that allow them to accumulate more iron than normal cells.
Scientists are actively studying the relationship between iron metabolism, inflammation and cancer development. Research suggests that excess iron may:

🔸 Increase oxidative stress
🔸 Contribute to chronic inflammation
🔸 Promote DNA damage
🔸 Support environments that may favour abnormal cell growth

This does NOT mean that iron causes cancer, nor that everyone with high iron is at risk. However, maintaining healthy iron balance appears to be an important aspect of long-term health and disease prevention. And those with cancer should not be taking iron supplements unless they have lost a lot of blood through treatment or surgeries, and they are being guided by a medical doctor (it is important to test your levels).

🍊 What About Vitamin C?

Vitamin C significantly increases the absorption of NON-HEME IRON (the form of iron found in plant foods).
For people who are iron deficient, this can be incredibly beneficial. For example:

🥬 Spinach + lemon juice
🥬 Lentils + bell peppers
🥬 Beans + citrus

These combinations can dramatically improve iron absorption.
However, for individuals with elevated iron stores, high ferritin levels or iron overload conditions, regularly combining high-dose Vitamin C supplements with iron-rich meals may increase iron absorption further.

This is one reason why iron supplementation should never be taken blindly without appropriate testing.

⚠️ What causes high iron?

There are several possible causes:
🔸 Hereditary Haemochromatosis (a genetic condition causing excessive iron absorption)
🔸 Frequent iron supplementation
🔸 Repeated blood transfusions
🔸 Excessive intake of iron-fortified products
🔸 Certain liver conditions
🔸 Chronic inflammation
🔸 Some metabolic disorders
🔸 Drinking water with high iron

It is important to remember that a HIGH FERRITIN level does not always mean excess iron.

Ferritin is also an inflammatory marker and may be elevated due to:
🔥 Infection
🔥 Inflammation
🔥 Liver disease
🔥 Autoimmune conditions
🔥 Cancer

This is why a complete iron study is often more informative than ferritin alone.

💡 What Should You Test?

If you're concerned about iron status, ask your healthcare practitioner about:
✔ Ferritin
✔ Serum Iron
✔ Transferrin Saturation
✔ Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC)
✔ Full Blood Count

These tests provide a much clearer picture than ferritin alone.

🌿 The Bottom Line

Iron is essential for life. Too little can leave us exhausted and depleted. Too much can contribute to oxidative stress and inflammation.
When we understand our body's unique needs and support them appropriately, we create the conditions for resilience, vitality and long-term health.

18/06/2026

One can only support people who are going through cancer in a deep, embodied way when you have been through it yourself. I've been through modern treatment and I have taken my health into my own hands after having a recurrence, a year after my treatment ended.

What they don't tell you is that chemotherapy doesn't kill cancer. It only kills the 'daughter cells' - the rapidly dividing tumour cells. It also weakens the immune system (which is the foundation of our health) as well as creating massive inflammation - which is the root cause of disease. We can't heal when we are destroying the very things that health depends on.

There is so much more to the story of real, deep body support - to help the body to heal itself - by taking away the things that we are exposing it to that are actively contributing to - and causing - disease.

My work encompasses supporting people who have been diagnosed through their chosen treatment path - I guide them in what their options are and how they can protect and restore their body post-treatment. I also support them through understanding their body and the possible reasons why they got cancer in the first place - and how to prevent it returning.

I also teach and guide people on how to prevent cancer before it starts - through lifestyle changes and consciously connecting with our beautiful body that works so hard for us.
