🧂🇿🇦 SOUTH AFRICA… IT’S TIME TO MAKE THE SALT SHIFT! ❤️
Did you know that many South Africans consume far more salt than the recommended daily amount? Excess salt intake is strongly linked to:
⚠️ High Blood Pressure

⚠️ Kidney Disease
This World Salt Awareness Week (11–17 May 2026), Dietitians South Africa joins the movement to promote healthier eating habits and better heart health for all.

Today is World Obesity Day — a moment to raise awareness, inspire change, and support each other on the journey toward healthier futures! 💚
This year’s theme, “8 Billion Reasons to Act on Obesity,” highlights that every single one of us — all 8 billion people on this planet — has a reason to care and a role to play. Obesity isn’t just about individual choices — it’s tied to the environments we live in, the foods we can access, the support we receive, and the dignity we’re given. It’s about communities, systems, compassion, and health for all.
✨ Let’s use today to spark positive conversations, challenge stigma, and motivate action — whether that’s learning, moving, supporting someone, or advocating for healthier spaces. Together, we can change the story. 💪🌱

Nobody talks about this enough 👀
Alcohol doesn’t just affect your liver or waistline — it can mess with your fertility.

In women:
• Hormones get disrupted
• Ovulation can become irregular
• Conception may take longer

In men:
• Testosterone drops
• S***m count & quality decline
• Libido and performance can suffer

And No, this isn’t only about “heavy drinkers”.
Regular “social drinking” can still work against reproductive goals.

If you’re serious about conceiving, alcohol is one of the first lifestyle factors worth reducing or cutting out completely.

Let’s be honest about it.

Save this • Share with your partner • Let’s Normalise having this conversation.

Alcohol & Fat Loss: What You Need to Know

If your goal is weight loss, alcohol may be slowing your progress more than you realise.

When you drink alcohol, your body prioritises breaking it down first — meaning fat burning is temporarily put on hold. On top of that, alcohol:

Provides empty calories with little to no nutritional value:

Can increase appetite and cravings,
Disrupts sleep and recovery, which affects metabolism
Lowers inhibitions, making overeating more likely.

This doesn’t mean you can never enjoy a drink, but “frequency and portion size matter”

For better fat loss results:
Limit alcohol intake
Choose lower-calorie options
Avoid drinking on an empty stomach
Prioritise consistency over perfection
Remember: sustainable weight loss is about balance, not extremes.

BLAND DIET IN PEPTIC ULCER MANAGEMENT-A DIETITIAN’S PERSPECTIVE

Peptic ulcer disease is not managed with medication alone.
Targeted nutrition therapy, especially a bland diet, plays a crucial role in symptom relief, mucosal healing, and prevention of ulcer recurrence.
As a Dietitian, my goal is to reduce gastric irritation while ensuring adequate nutrition for recovery.

🎯 Why a Bland Diet in Peptic Ulcer?
A bland diet helps to:
Minimize gastric acid stimulation
Reduce mucosal irritation
Control epigastric pain, heartburn, and nausea
Support ulcer healing without compromising nutrient intake

🍚 Key Principles of a Bland Diet
✔️ Soft, easily digestible foods
✔️ Low fat and low spice content
✔️ Moderate portion sizes
✔️ Regular, small meals (5–6/day)
✔️ Avoidance of irritants that increase acid secretion

🥗 Recommended Foods
Carbohydrates
Pap, custard, rice, boiled potatoes
Soft bread, oatmeal, cornflakes
Proteins
Boiled or steamed fish
Skinless chicken (boiled)
Eggs (boiled or poached)
Low-fat milk and yogurt (if tolerated)
Fruits & Vegetables
Ripe banana
Pawpaw
Watermelon
Boiled carrots, pumpkin, spinach
Fats (Minimal)
Small amounts of vegetable oil

🚫 Foods to Avoid
❌ Pepper, chili, curry, excess spices
❌ Fried and fatty foods
❌ Alcohol and carbonated drinks
❌ Coffee, strong tea, chocolate
❌ Citrus fruits during acute pain
❌ Smoking (major ulcer trigger)

⏰ Meal Timing Matters
Skipping meals worsens ulcer pain.
Small, frequent meals help buffer stomach acid and prevent mucosal damage.

🩺 Clinical Note
A bland diet is supportive therapy, not a cure.
It works best when combined with:
H. pylori eradication therapy
Acid-suppressing medications
Stress reduction and lifestyle modification

✅ Note:
A properly planned bland diet reduces pain, promotes healing, and improves quality of life in peptic ulcer patients.
Nutrition is not optional in ulcer care - it is therapeutic.

💜 World Prematurity Day
Theme 2025: “Give preterm babies a strong start for a hopeful future.”
Today, we honour the tiny fighters who arrived too soon, the families who stand by them with endless strength, and the healthcare teams who work tirelessly to give every preterm baby the best possible start.
As healthcare professionals, our role goes beyond treatment — it’s about advocacy, education, and compassion. Let’s continue raising awareness on early nutrition, maternal health, and supportive neonatal care.
💜 Together, we can build a future where every baby thrives — no matter how early they arrive.
