parkrun milestone...
You've probably heard us mention parkrun (which can also be parkwalk!) as a way of getting exercise, while enjoying nature and community. This past weekend saw the 1,000,000th parkrun event take place. It's an impressive milestone, but we're even more excited about the first-timers. Our full staff (minus Margaret, on leave) joined Heather on her first event. We'd love to have you join us next week!

Today we are celebrating Youth. We are honouring the young people who, despite our uncertain times, are doing their bit to imagine our future. It is our privilege to care for you!

Before joining the practice, Ben worked as the Clinical Medicolegal advisor to the Eastern Cape department of health (ECDOH). It was interesting work, and is crucial for provinces to do well (and translate into better clinical care) given the billions being spent. While GP work takes most of his time and attention, he's kept his hand in... currently consulting to the Mpumalanga department of health (DOH). This week he spent Thursday and Friday at Mmametlakhe Hospital.

Personal Health Pathways
Attention Discovery medical aid members!
Have you heard about Personal Health Pathways? It is individualised advice drawn from the 60+million life-years of data Discovery have - that highlights your "next best action" to prevent disease and live healthy. It's free to sign up, and almost all the actions they suggest are paid for by screening or prevention benefits. The best part? They pay you. Each action is incentivised - often by as much as R500 to R1000. Families can earn up to R24,000 per year. Please pop in to chat to us, or remember to ask at your next appointment. Disclosure: everyone wins. Discovery don't want to pay your ICU bill. They pay us more if you sign up. And you get both money and better preventative health.

Its day - a day observed internationally, acknowledging that doctors have mental health challenges too, and reminding colleagues that they are not alone. Whoever you are, wherever you are, it's OK not to be OK. There's someone available to talk to, if you need to connect.

Discovery Health runs the biggest medical scheme in the country (2.7m lives insured). Once a year they invite a selection of doctors to "listening sessions" held around the country. Drs Taryn and Ben, together with nurse Debbie, were privileged to be part of last night's session in East London.

We live in a technological world and we're working hard to make use of what's available to improve the care we provide. For example, we now have an Al assistant called Heidi who listens to our consultations and then makes the medical notes - allowing us to stay focused on our patients (and saving us from writing the notes at home tonight). We're also using Al from the American Medical Association .ai to help double check diagnosis and treatment decisions when we encounter something unusual. You can be confident that there is always a "human in the loop" - we're still responsible for your care, that your data is safe and that we'll always disclose this to you in the consultation too.

This graph is from the very latest report from the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD). Flu rates are climbing steadily.
We strongly recommend the flu vaccine (and especially strongly for people with chronic respiratory illness, diabetes, cancer, or who are over the age of 65 years). It is an inactivated virus that is used in the flu vaccine, so you cannot catch flu from it, though some people have some mild symptoms from their immune system ramping up the protection.
If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to come and chat to us. You can also get your flu vaccine at our rooms.

Please join us in welcoming Dr Lisa Coltman back to the team. After a popular locum with us last year, she has officially joined the practice as a locum doctor, as we expand our doctor capacity following the Drs Cole and Webster choosing to provide services separately. Together with Dr Graham, she’ll become a familiar face over the coming months.

Dr Taryn is meanwhile speaking today at a ladies’ meeting on Living Joyfully with Menopause.

If you need to see a doctor this weekend, Dr Lisa will be consulting in the rooms on both mornings and will be available on call at 0772459024

Promoting healthy lifestyles #2
Blood pressure

# Did you know that a "normal BP" is 120/80? The top number is the pressure when the heart beats, the bottom number is the pressure in the system when the heart relaxes.
# Did you know that a BP over 140/90 is associated with a higher risk of heart attack and stroke?
# Did you know that checking your BP regularly and making changes to your lifestyle can reduce the need for taking medication?

Our professional nurses are happy to check your blood pressure for you.
