DASO Nelson Mandela University

DASO Nelson Mandela University DASO is the Democratic Alliance Students Organisation.

DASO is an ancillary organisation of the Democratic Alliance (DA) based on a tertiary campus, and therefore in itself subscribes to the vision, mission, and strategies of the DA however with its own unique focus. We, the students of the Democratic Alliance Students Organisation, rooted in the values of constitutional liberal democracy, believe that education is the cornerstone of the liberation of

all South African students and the catalyst for the full realisation of the rights and freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution (1996). We further believe that intellectual independence and open debate are vital to the preservation of a healthy democracy. We advocate the enrichment of the whole individual – intellectual, personal, cultural and physical – at institutions of tertiary education, through the development of academic, social, cultural and sporting facilities. We therefore commit ourselves to the protection and promotion of an open and free educational environment based on academic freedom, equality of opportunity and respect for individual worth.

RE: Study With DASO Initiative

Dear Madibaz Students,

Today, the DASO-led SRC successfully hosted a Study With DASO initiative at SSSV Residence Auditorium, aimed at supporting students as they prepare for their academic commitments.

As part of the initiative, we provided coffee and biscuits to help energise and “power up” students during their study sessions. This forms part of our ongoing efforts to create a supportive and conducive academic environment, especially during demanding academic periods.

We are encouraged by the positive turnout and engagement from students who made use of the space to study, collaborate, and motivate one another.

The DASO-led SRC remains committed to initiatives that prioritise student well-being, academic success, and accessible support within residence spaces.

RE: DASO Sandwich Drive

Dear Madibaz,

Today we hosted a successful Sandwich Drive at the Indoor Sports Centre, where students preparing to write their examinations received sandwiches and coffee.

While a sandwich and a cup of coffee may seem small to some, for many students it was a reminder that they are not alone in this journey. Examination season is often accompanied by stress, anxiety, exhaustion, and financial challenges. Through this initiative, DASO wanted every student to know that their hard work is seen, their sacrifices are appreciated, and their dreams matter.

To every student burning the midnight oil, attending study sessions and pushing through difficult circumstances, keep going. Your dedication today is building the future you deserve tomorrow. Do not allow temporary challenges to make you doubt your potential.

We will continue to serve, support, and stand alongside students because we believe that every student deserves an opportunity to succeed.

Yours in struggle,
DASO IC NMU

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

DASO CONDEMNS THE CONTINUED RUNAROUND BETWEEN NSFAS AND NMU OVER GAP FUNDING STUDENTS

We are very frustrated at the continued back-and-forth between NSFAS and the University’s Financial Aid Office regarding students affected by the NSFAS gap funding crisis.

For months the affected students have been financially wounded and academically challenged . Since April 2026, students have been left in limbo while two institutions entrusted with their future continue to pass responsibility between one another.

During our engagements with the NSFAS Priority Team, NSFAS informed DASO that they were awaiting the academic results of affected students from the University in order to process the matter. In an effort to seek clarity and accountability, we wrote to the Financial Aid Manager, Mr Muller, requesting confirmation on whether the required academic results had been submitted.

To our shock, the Financial Aid Office responded by claiming that the academic results had already been sent to NSFAS. This directly contradicts what NSFAS communicated to DASO, namely that they were still waiting for the information from the University.

This childish blame game has become all too familiar. Every year when students face NSFAS-related challenges, the same script unfolds the University claims it has submitted the required information, while NSFAS claims it is waiting for the University. Meanwhile, students are left to suffer the consequences of institutional incompetence and poor communication.

DASO refuses to accept this endless cycle of excuses. Students are not ping-pong balls to be thrown between NSFAS and the University. They are human beings whose academic futures, accommodation and financial wellbeing are being jeopardised by this lack of urgency and accountability.

We therefore call on NSFAS and Nelson Mandela University to stop the finger pointing and immediately provide a joint resolution on the status of the affected students.

We will escalate this matter to VC of the university and Nsfas board until a satisfactory resolution is reached. We will not stand by while students are treated as statistics and left behind by institutions that exist to serve them.
