๐คข๐ง GASTRO & DIARRHOEA DOING THE ROUNDS?
At this time of year, we often see more patients with vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach cramps โ especially children.
โGastroโ isnโt one specific illness. Acute gastroenteritis can be caused by different viruses and bacteria, and sometimes by contaminated food or water. Importantly, not every case needs an antibiotic.
๐ง HYDRATION IS THE PRIORITY
Vomiting and diarrhoea cause the body to lose both fluid and important electrolytes.
โ๏ธ Use a proper oral rehydration solution (ORS) where possible.
โ๏ธ If vomiting, give small amounts frequently rather than a large drink at once.
โ๏ธ Continue breastfeeding or normal formula feeds in babies unless advised otherwise.
โ๏ธ Simple, normal foods can gradually be reintroduced as appetite returns.
โ๏ธ ORS is generally a better choice for rehydration than fizzy drinks, sports drinks or juice.
๐ WATCH FOR DEHYDRATION, especially in babies and young children:
๐ฉ Less urine or fewer wet nappies
๐ฉ Dry mouth or tongue
๐ฉ Few or no tears when crying
๐ฉ Unusual sleepiness or weakness
๐ฉ Unable or unwilling to drink
๐ฉ Persistent vomiting
Seek medical attention if there is blood in the stool, severe abdominal pain, high or persistent fever, significant dehydration, or if a baby or child appears particularly unwell.
๐งผ AND REMEMBER โ GASTRO SPREADS EASILY!
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, clean toilets and frequently touched surfaces, and avoid preparing food for others while you are ill.
