While the statistics below come from the United States, they reflect a global trend that applies just as much here in South Africa.
As the Baby Boomer generation ages, the number of people over 65 has increased dramatically — by 31% between 2007 and 2016 — and by 2034, older adults are expected to outnumber children (U.S. Census Bureau, 2020). With this shift comes a higher rate of age-related illness and injury, especially falls.
According to the CDC, 1 in 4 Americans over 65 falls each year — and this risk increases with age (CDC, 2020). In 2016 alone, falls caused nearly 30,000 deaths in older adults, making it the leading cause of injury-related death in this population (National Vital Statistics System, 2016). But the risk doesn’t start at 65. A study by Talbot et al. found that 21% of middle-aged adults (46–65) also experience falls within a 2-year period — compared to 35% in older adults.
The consequences are serious. One out of every five falls results in significant injury — such as hip fractures or traumatic brain injuries — and about 300,000 older adults are hospitalized each year for hip fractures alone, 95% of which result from falls (CDC, 2020). Beyond the physical toll, falls are linked to depression, anxiety, social isolation, and a greater loss of independence (Tinetti et al., 1988). Alarmingly, a person who has fallen once is three times more likely to fall again (Lord et al., 2007).
Here’s the hopeful part: A large 2012 systematic review found that exercise is the most effective intervention for preventing falls — more so than medication, dietary changes, or psychological therapies (Gillespie et al., 2012).
That’s where Biokinetics comes in.
As movement specialists, biokineticists help individuals improve balance, strength, and coordination through tailored exercise programs — reducing the risk of falls and helping people stay independent and mobile for longer.
💡 Whether you're in your 40s, 60s, or beyond, it's never too early — or too late — to start moving better.
