The Department of Health, in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS), has issued a strong warning to the public after a 34-year-old man from Mpumalanga was arrested yesterday for mocking and verbally abusing a person living with HIV.

According to SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Mokoena, the suspect allegedly insulted and humiliated a local resident by shouting discriminatory remarks about their HIV status in public. The incident reportedly took place outside a shopping complex in Siyabuswa, drawing attention from onlookers who were deeply disturbed by the man’s behavior.

Police were called to the scene, and after reviewing witness statements and video footage, the suspect was detained and charged under the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act (PEPUDA) β€” a law that protects individuals from discrimination, stigma, and hate speech.

> β€œMocking or discriminating against anyone based on their HIV status is a criminal offense. Such actions violate human rights and dignity,” said Sergeant Mokoena. β€œWe encourage all citizens to report similar cases immediately.”

The Department of Health emphasized that stigmatizing people living with HIV remains a major barrier to fighting the epidemic.

> β€œWhen we shame others, we drive them away from getting treatment and support. South Africa has made huge progress in HIV care β€” but stigma still kills silently,” said Department spokesperson Ms. Motsumi.

The suspect is expected to appear in court later this week. Authorities are urging communities to promote compassion, respect, and education instead of hate and mockery.

πŸ’¬ Community Message:
If you or someone you know experiences discrimination due to HIV status, report it at your nearest police station or contact the Department of Health’s toll-free line 0800 012 322.

Headline: HIV Patients Raise Concerns Over Rude Nurses and Poor Service at Local Hospitals

Byline: By Dinah M | Pudi ya Tsa Tsela News

Many HIV-positive patients across local clinics and hospitals have voiced growing frustration about the poor treatment they receive from some healthcare workers. According to several complaints, patients say nurses often speak to them harshly, show little compassion, and make them feel unwelcome when seeking help.

β€œI went to the clinic for my treatment, but the nurse shouted at me in front of everyone,” said one patient who asked to remain anonymous. β€œIt’s hard enough living with this condition β€” we don’t need more pain from the people who are supposed to care for us.”

Others reported long waiting hours and being ignored while nurses engage in personal conversations or take long breaks. Patients claim this attitude not only discourages them from collecting their medication but also affects their mental health and confidence in the public health system.

Community leaders have called on the Department of Health to investigate these claims and ensure proper training on empathy, confidentiality, and professionalism. β€œHealthcare is not just about medicine β€” it’s about compassion and respect,” said one activist.

The Department has promised to review the situation and remind healthcare workers of their duty to treat all patients with dignity, especially those living with chronic illnesses like HIV.
