Peer Education Workshop | Vhembe West District

Takalani Naledzani, Advocacy Officer at IHPS, and Happy Phaleng from the Aurum Institute supported the Limpopo Department of Education – Vhembe West District Peer Education Workshop at Makhado CPTD.

The workshop focuses on strengthening the establishment of peer education in schools, while clarifying the roles and responsibilities of peer educators in supporting learner wellbeing.

Our approach is rooted in inclusion and strengthening systems that respond to people holistically—recognising that learner wellbeing goes beyond health alone and includes mental, social, emotional, physical and educational needs.

Remembering those we have lost while advocating for access to quality healthcare.

In Mangaung, recommitment was also about remembrance, healing and affirmation — honouring those who have passed on while advocating for the healthcare and dignity that every person deserves.

We remember those whose lives touched our communities and whose experiences continue to remind us why the fight for quality, accessible and stigma-free healthcare must continue.

The line-up of speakers reflected the strength and diversity of the community, with voices from the Department of Health, Departmentofjustice, , faith-based leaders, students and community-based organisations

For communities that have longed for trust, support and meaningful engagement, the Flag Tour is a reaffirmation that we are listening, we are healing, and we are recommitting.

Recommitting to healthcare where everyone is treated with dignity, respect and without stigma.

We remember. We heal. We recommit. We continue the conversation.

The Bojanala conversation took a powerful turn — moving beyond healthcare access to explore economic participation, opportunity, dignity and the ability of LGBTQI+ communities to thrive.

As one q***r participant put it:
“Health is wealth. We want to be well off.”

In attendance were representatives from Tsitsing Kgotla ya Rakhudu, District Health leadership, the Traditional Healers Organisation, Civil Society Forum, Colour Me Foundation, the LGBTIQ+ sector, Tshisimogo Foundation, community organisations, and beneficiaries from various sub-districts.

The diversity of voices reinforced an important message: health and wellbeing cannot be separated from economic opportunity, social inclusion, safety and dignity.

The Flag Tour continues to create spaces where communities can speak for themselves, share their experiences and shape the conversations that affect their lives.

The National Flag Tour arrived in Embalenhle, Secunda, together with Rainbow Seeds, bringing stakeholders, service providers and community voices together around one important question:

“Recommitment is an ongoing conversation, What has been your experience?”

The programme featured voices from Civil Society Forum leadership, District Department of Health representatives, Department of Social Development, SAPS, the Victim Empowerment Centre in Secunda, local community organisations, the Secunda Pride team, and beneficiaries of Rainbow Seeds services in the district.

The conversation provided an opportunity to reflect on lived experiences, celebrate progress, identify gaps and strengthen our collective commitment to ensuring that key populations access services with dignity, safety, respect and without stigma.

The conversation continues. The commitment must continue too.

Today, the National Pride Flag Tour arrives in Johannesburg, creating space for reflection, dialogue and renewed commitment to the work of supporting Key Populations.

We were joined in this important conversation by Dr Diana Mokoena of Anova Health Institute, Gladys Chabalala, Co-Chairperson of the Gauteng AIDS Council and Provincial Chairperson of the Gauteng SANAC Civil Society Forum, and Gauteng LGBTIQ sector leader Meisie Motaung, alongside organisations including OUT Wellbeing, Best Health Solutions, The City of Johannesburg District Department of Health, Khoroni Men’s Forum, beneficiaries, and other members of the community.

We celebrate the progress made, acknowledge the challenges ahead, and reaffirm the importance of strong partnerships, community voices and accessible, stigma-free services.

The journey continues. The work continues. And we move forward together.
