Redefining Pressure for High-Performance
As executives and business owners, we do not have the luxury of avoiding pressure. We work in complex environments where high-stakes decisions and relentless demands are the baseline.
When my team and I recently conducted our wellness session, "Thriving Under Pressure: Mental Wellness in Difficult Times," the first truth we explored is that the challenge is not the pressure itself, but how we respond to it.
the professional pressure we face often looks like multiple deadlines and immense responsibilities. However, our brains are ancient. Your amygdala—the brain’s alarm system—struggles to differentiate a corporate deadline from a physical physical danger.
When this "Amygdala Hijack" occurs, our bodies flood with cortisol and adrenaline, forcing us into 'fight-or-flight' mode. This response can be highly effective in short bursts, keeping us alert and prepared.
But when this biological reaction becomes the chronic state of our leadership, it turns problematic. We enter 'Survival Mode.'
In 'Survival Mode,' our brain overrides rational thought and prioritizes immediate relief over long-term planning. For an executive, this often translates to:
1. Making reactive financial decisions.
2. Experiencing an 'emotional freeze' or avoidance of difficult tasks.
3. Accumulating debt dependencies to manage stress.
4. Suffering from poor concentration and memory.
If we are operating permanently from this place of hidden anxiety, we are not leading efficiently; we are merely enduring.
