New at Hear2Help: Acoustic Reflex Testing.

When a loud sound is presented, a tiny muscle in the middle ear normally contracts automatically, that's the acoustic reflex. Testing this response can give important information about the auditory system and may help us investigate middle-ear concerns, cochlear involvement, auditory nerve concerns and pathway function as part of a full diagnostic battery.

This is especially useful when results need deeper interpretation, or when we need more information for referral and management.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Here's something worth knowing: some chemotherapy can affect your hearing.

Certain chemo drugs can damage the delicate hair cells of the inner ear, leading to hearing loss, tinnitus or dizziness. Changes can appear during treatment or months later.

That's why audiological monitoring matters: a baseline hearing test before treatment starts, and follow-up assessments along the way, help track any changes early. It's a conversation worth having with your oncology team and your audiologist.

What is tympanometry? It's a quick, painless test that tells us how the middle ear is functioning, measuring eardrum movement, middle-ear pressure and ear canal volume.

Results can help identify patterns:
Type A - normal middle-ear function;
Type B - often seen with fluid, perforation or very reduced movement;
Type C - often linked to negative middle-ear pressure or Eustachian tube dysfunction.
