Take a closer look at your ear. It isn't a simple smooth funnel. It has ridges, valleys, folds and hollows. And they all have names!

Meet the pinna (auricle): helix, antihelix, co**ha, tragus, antitragus and the soft lobule. It's made mostly of elastic cartilage covered by skin. Those curves aren't just decorative. They collect and modify incoming sound before directing it towards the ear canal; and the way sound interacts with these folds helps your auditory system work out where a sound came from.

Your strangely shaped ear is actually part of your sound-location system.

Happy Spring Day! While the world springs into action around you, your ears have been quietly doing it every single day.

When we think about hearing, we think of the cochlea, the hearing nerve and the brain. But hearing actually begins outside your head. The outer ear is a beautifully designed acoustic system: it collects sound, directs it into the ear canal, enhances certain frequencies and helps protect the deeper structures of the ear.

Over the next seven posts we're following a sound wave on its journey through this incredible little system.
Next: why is your ear shaped like that?

Once you're comfortable with your hearing aids, we practise real-world listening: because life doesn't happen in a soundproof room.

Coffee shops, restaurants, family gatherings, the car, shopping centres; we help you succeed in the places that matter most to you.

Our goal is for hearing to become natural again, not something you constantly have to think about.

Listening is a skill, and your brain can improve with practice. Aural rehabilitation strengthens the specific skills your brain needs:
-Telling similar sounds apart (like "fifteen" vs "fifty")
-Remembering spoken information
-Filling in missing pieces when there's noise
-Processing speech more quickly

It’s just like strengthening muscles through exercise.

One of the biggest myths about hearing aids is that they solve every communication problem. The truth is, successful communication involves everyone.

That's why we include family in the rehabilitation process; teaching practical strategies like facing the person when speaking, reducing background noise, and rephrasing instead of repeating.

When families understand hearing loss, frustration decreases and relationships become stronger.

Your ears don't actually hear, they collect sound. Your brain recognises voices, filters noise, remembers words and gives sounds meaning.

When you've had hearing loss for years, parts of your brain stop receiving enough sound. Wearing hearing aids wakes those parts back up.

Everything sounding loud or strange? That's not a problem. It means your brain is learning again.

I CAN HEAR THEM AGAIN. ❤️

A week ago, I underwent a tympanoplasty on my right ear, and the grommet in my left ear was removed.

And something extraordinary has happened.

I can hear.

My hearing has improved dramatically.

The pulsating tinnitus that followed me for months is gone.

My balance is holding.

And suddenly, the most ordinary sounds have become the greatest gifts of my life.

I can hear my car.

I can hear my children talking from another room.

I can hear them laughing from more than ten steps away.

Things I would never have noticed before now stop me in my tracks.

Because I know what silence feels like.

This year brought me to places I never imagined I would go.

There were moments when the pain, dizziness, hearing loss, tinnitus, hospital admissions and uncertainty became too much.

There were moments when I genuinely didn’t know how I was going to keep doing it.

I was angry.

I asked God:

Why my hearing?

Why take the very thing I use every day to help other people?

I didn’t understand.

Maybe I still don’t completely.

But I’m standing on the other side of those darkest months now, and I am different.

I know what it feels like when hearing loss steals your confidence.

I know the exhaustion of trying to understand speech.

I know what it’s like to watch someone’s mouth because you can’t understand their words.

I know the frustration of asking, “What did you say?” again and again.

I know tinnitus.

I know vertigo.

I know hearing aids.

And I know how unbelievably precious something as simple as hearing your child laugh can be.

I will never take that sound for granted again.

My ear is still healing.

My story isn’t completely finished.

But today I don’t need all the answers.

Today I am simply grateful.

Grateful for my doctors.

Grateful for the people who carried me.

Grateful for my children.

Grateful for my work.

Grateful for sound.

And incredibly grateful that after a year that brought me to my knees…

I am ready to stand up again.

I am ready to be strong again.

And perhaps I will be a different kind of strong this time.
