I spent a long time thinking about this question today:

What makes a good specialist?

Not what makes a good GP — we all generally understand that. But what truly makes a good specialist?

And the answer, to me, became very clear.

A good specialist is someone who knows when it is time to escalate care, it does not matter the years of experience or academic accolades, its a matter of WHEN

Not because they are incompetent.
Not because they have failed.
But because they care enough about the patient to recognise when another level of expertise is needed.

Even the most senior specialists — doctors with years of experience, knowledge, and skill — should never hesitate to refer a patient to someone even more specialised when they have reached the limit of what they can offer.

That is not weakness.
That is wisdom.
That is humility.
And most importantly, that is good medicine.

What does not make a good specialist is continuing the same management while the patient is clearly not improving, simply because of pride, ego, or the inability to let go of control.

The best specialists are the ones who put the patient first — always.

Escalation is not failure in medicine.
Sometimes, it is the very thing that saves a life.

And the doctors who understand that deserve enormous respect.

Yesterday marked 1 year since my op. I've went through some pretty hectic stalls, the last one lasted longer than 2 months. Still happy that I made this choice. My life has changed for the better. I am not where I want to be, but I am not where I was and that is all that counts. I won't stop until I reach my goal.
Thank you to the team (Dr Opperman, Gerdie amd Welma), without your support I wouldn't have come this far, probably wouldn't have had the courage to start in the first place. It truly does change one's life. I will be forever thankful ❤️❤️❤️
