Taking the first steps into the animal feed industry.

On 9 October 2026, AFMA joined the SASAS Free State Branch Student Day at the University of the Free State (UFS). AFMA's Technical Intern Cilé-Mari Bredenkamp presented “First Steps into the Animal Feed Industry.”

Drawing on her experience as an Animal Science graduate, an MScAgric Animal Nutrition student and an AFMA Technical Intern, Cilé-Mari shared what the transition from university to industry can look like. She also highlighted the wide range of career opportunities across the animal feed value chain.

Her message to students was to approach their careers with enthusiasm and confidence, stay willing to learn, and embrace opportunities to get involved.

She ended with a reminder:
“You don’t need to know the whole path. Just take the next step.”

AFMA is committed to supporting the next generation of animal feed professionals. We wish all UFS students every success in their studies and future careers.

Strengthen your biosecurity knowledge and test your understanding with AFMA’s free Biosecurity in Feed Mills Self-Study Quiz available on the AFMA website and open to everyone in the industry!

The quiz is designed to help participants:

✅ Identify and manage biosecurity risks across feed-mill operations using GMP-based practices
✅ Apply effective biosecurity measures for inputs, production, storage, transport, traceability and staff training
✅ Strengthen operational readiness to prevent, detect and respond to pathogenic agents

Based on the IFIF Biosecurity Guidance for Feed Mills (2024), the quiz reflects globally aligned best practices for managing biological hazards in feed manufacturing.

We are pleased to announce our new Board of Directors, led by Chairperson Mrs Anina Hunter and Vice-Chairperson Mr Thinus van Lill .

The Board will guide AFMA’s strategic focus for the year ahead, creating collective industry value, strengthening collaboration and supporting a more competitive, credible and resilient animal feed industry.

AFMA welcomes new Board members Mr Hugo Buys and Mr Bertus Kirstein, and sincerely thanks outgoing Directors Mr Michael Schmitz and Dr Francois Crots for their valuable contribution and service.
