💙 NICU Graduate 💙

A new heartbeat.
Ten tiny fingers and ten tiny toes.
A voice still too little to say “Mommy” or “Daddy.”

Yet somehow, little Cohan has found a place in each of our hearts.

On 3 June 2026, after 106 days in the NICU, we celebrate a milestone that once felt so far away. Born at just 27 weeks, Cohan has shown a strength far greater than his tiny size, and today he finally gets to go home with Mom and Dad.

What an unbelievable privilege it has been to be a small part of your journey. As myself and Emily’s very first premature baby, you will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Cohan, our prayers have been answered.

May your ten little fingers touch countless lives as you grow, and may your ten tiny toes leave deep footprints in the hearts of everyone you meet along the way.

To Mom and Dad — thank you for allowing us to walk a small part of this journey with you. Your strength, faith, and unwavering love have been inspiring to witness.

A special thank you to the incredible team at Dr Magda Verster Pediatrics. It is an honour to be part of such an amazing team and to witness the dedication, expertise, and love that goes into caring for these precious little lives every single day. ❌ Myth: “Chest physio is just clapping your child on the back.”

✅ Busted!

Chest physiotherapy is so much more than percussion alone.

While gentle percussion may be used in some cases, a physiotherapist carefully assesses your child’s:
🫁 Breathing pattern
🫁 Lung condition
🫁 Age and developmental stage
🫁 Ability to cough and clear secretions

Treatment may include:
✨ Positioning
✨ Breathing exercises
✨ Assisted cough techniques
✨ Airway clearance techniques
✨ Mobilisation and movement
✨ Parent education

Not every child with a cough or chest infection needs percussion, and in some cases, incorrect “clapping” at home may be ineffective or even inappropriate.

💡 The goal of chest physiotherapy isn’t simply to loosen mucus—it’s to help your child breathe easier, clear their airways effectively, and support their recovery safely.
