COMPRESSION BOOTS: MORE THAN JUST A LEG MASSAGE š¦µš¼
These are Normatec dynamic compression boots ā and the science behind them is fascinating.
The boots use intermittent pneumatic compression, with air-filled chambers that sequentially inflate around the legs, working from the feet upwards.
Think of it as mechanically assisting the bodyās natural muscle pump.
š¬ What is happening physiologically?
The rhythmic compression can:
⢠Encourage venous return ā helping blood move back towards the heart
⢠Promote circulation in the lower limbs
⢠Assist the movement of interstitial fluid, potentially reducing feelings of heaviness and swelling
⢠Reduce post-exercise soreness and perceived fatigue
⢠Potentially support recovery following strenuous exercise
There is good physiological evidence that intermittent pneumatic compression can influence blood flow, and recent research suggests it may have a modest benefit for exercise-related soreness and recovery. However, the research does not support the idea that these boots are a miracle recovery treatment ā the effects are generally modest and protocols matter. (PubMedā )
One interesting point: the effect isnāt simply āsqueezing the legsā. The sequential pressure wave is designed to move fluid proximally, broadly mimicking the pumping action of contracting muscles.
So while they feel incredibly relaxing, there is some genuine physiology happening underneath that relaxation.
Recovery isnāt just about training harder. Itās also about helping the body recover smarter.
