After years of tests and doctor appointments, Birdie Rose finally received answers about her fragile skin condition.

At just seven years old, Birdie was diagnosed with progeria, a rare disease that causes premature ageing and affects the entire body. Finding the right diagnosis and treatment changed more than her healthcare journey.

It helped her gain the confidence and ability to play and live more comfortably – something all children should have.

Meet our General Surgeon, Dr Pieter Swart. Dr Swart has been in private practice as a general surgeon since 1997. He believes in continuous development and has attended various conferences and workshops of the European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons to enhance his knowledge and experience.

Dr Swart opened an out-patient endoscopy unit 3 years ago, performing gastroscopies, colonoscopies and minor procedures in his rooms. He developed a keen interest in minimal invasive varicose vein surgeries under sedation and local anesthetic and as a result, he established the 'Vein and Endoscopy Centre of Excellence' to provide quality patient care and procedures.

Meet our general surgeon, Dr Craig Burns. Dr Burns commenced his journey in surgery, starting with community service and taking on a medical officer role in surgery at Kimberley Hospital. He completed his specialisation in surgery in 2020 at the Wits circuit, working at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and Helen Joseph Hospital. In 2024 he completed his specialist training having obtained FCS (SA) from CMSA and MMed (Surg) from Wits University. Dr Burns was also awarded a Golden Key award for academic achievement in surgery.

On Friday, 28 August, Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital hosted a Women’s Day celebration at the Blueberry Hill Hotel under the theme, “Women in Medicine.” The event brought together resident specialists and valued referring GPs, for an afternoon of inspiration, connection and appreciation.

We were honoured to have three phenomenal women share their stories:

- Life Healthcare Clinical Directorate, Dr Pitsi Malahlela, who delivered a powerful keynote on women leading in clinical medicine.
- Mia le Roux, Former Miss South Africa 2024, who spoke on resilience, purpose and embracing our differences.
- Dr Tamaryn Green, Former Miss South Africa 2018 and Miss Universe 1st Runner-Up 2018, who inspired us with her journey balancing medicine, motherhood and leadership.

The talks were truly inspirational and resonated deeply with our audience. The aim of the event was two-fold: to network with our GPs and referrers and to give back and say thank you for their continued support of our hospital and specialists..
