Clean sanitation is more than convenience—it’s infection prevention. On World Toilet Day we highlight how poor sanitation can lead to viral and bacterial spread, and how basic hygiene is a first defence

Contamination doesn’t stay in the toilet — it follows you.

To hands. To food. To surfaces. And eventually, into the bloodstream.

That’s how diarrhoea disease, parasites, and antibiotic-resistant infections take hold.

A clean toilet isn’t about convenience; it’s life-saving science.

🫁 World Pneumonia Day | Protecting Every Breath 🌍💙

Today, on World Pneumonia Day, we raise awareness about one of the world’s leading infectious causes of death — pneumonia. As a pathologist in clinical virology, I see firsthand how respiratory infections, both viral and bacterial, impact vulnerable populations — especially children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

Pneumonia can be caused by a range of pathogens — from viruses like influenza, RSV, and SARS-CoV-2, to bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae. Early diagnosis and prevention through vaccination, good hygiene, and timely medical care are essential to saving lives.

Let’s continue advocating for strong health systems, access to vaccines, and public awareness — because protecting the lungs means protecting life itself. 🫶

waiting for answers, and the minds behind the medicine. 💚

🦠 Let’s talk about: The Four Phases of a Viral Infection: Rotavirus Case Study

Rotavirus, one of the leading causes of severe diarrhoea in children, usually enters the body through:
1. Contaminated food 🍲
2. Unsafe water 💧
3. Unwashed hands ✋

Children are especially vulnerable because their immune systems are still developing and hand hygiene isn’t always perfect. This is where the infection journey begins.

👉 Stay tuned as we track how this virus moves through the body step by step!

Ever wonder what a haematologist does?

A haematologist is a type of pathologist who specialises in diagnosing and treating blood disorders. They play a crucial role in managing diseases like anemia, leukemia, lymphoma, and clotting disorders.

By analysing blood samples and bone marrow, haematologists help provide accurate diagnoses and guide treatment plans to ensure patients receive the best care possible. Their expertise is vital in the fight against blood-related illnesses.

🤧 Cold or flu: What's the difference?

Influenza (flu) and the common cold may share some symptoms, but they're caused by different viruses. Here's a simplified breakdown:

🦠 Virus: Flu is caused by influenza viruses, while the common cold can be caused by various viruses like rhinoviruses and coronaviruses.
🌡️ Symptoms: Flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headaches, and fatigue. Cold symptoms are usually milder, with a runny or stuffy nose being more common.
👩‍⚕️ Severity: Flu tends to be more severe, with intense symptoms that start abruptly, while colds are generally less intense and don't lead to serious health problems like pneumonia or hospitalisations.

Let's get into the debate on hand hygiene and which soap is better! Here's what you need to know about antibacterial soap versus plain soap:

Let's break down the differences between the two:

- Antibacterial Soap:
Contains added antibacterial agents such as triclosan or triclocarban.
It is formulated to kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria on the skin.

- Plain Soap:
Does not contain additional antibacterial agents.
Works by mechanically removing dirt, grease, and microbes from the skin.
The cleansing action of plain soap relies on the physical act of lathering and rinsing.

Facts from the Centers of Control and Disease Prevention
🧼Studies have not found any added health benefit from using antibacterial soap, except for professionals in healthcare settings.
🧼In 2016, the FDA banned over-the-counter sale of antibacterial soaps with certain ingredients because they are no better than plain soap at preventing illness.
🧼Some studies suggest that using antibacterial soap may contribute to antibiotic resistance.

You may continue with plain soap and water for effective and safe handwashing, it does the job as well.
