New Pill for HIV patients

A new pill that could replace years of exhausting daily medication routines for millions of people living with HIV has just cleared a major scientific milestone — and the results are giving researchers and patients real reason for hope.

Pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences has developed a single tablet combining two medicines — bictegravir and lenacapavir — into one simple daily dose, and in clinical trials, patients who switched to it kept the virus at undetectable levels after 48 weeks, performing just as well as far more complex multi-pill regimens with no serious new side effects reported.

Currently, many people living with HIV take anywhere between 2 and 11 pills every single day — with nearly half requiring medication more than once daily — making consistency a constant challenge and missed doses a serious health risk.

If approved, this single tablet could deliver something significant — better adherence, fewer treatment interruptions, and far less daily burden for people who have spent years managing complex medication schedules just to stay healthy.

For millions of people living with HIV around the world, that progress could mark a turning point in long-term care, treatment consistency, and overall quality of life.

Let's talk TB today

Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. While TB is usually treatable with a standard course of medicines, multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) develops when the bacteria no longer respond to the two most effective first-line drugs: isoniazid and rifampicin. This makes treatment more complicated, longer, and often more difficult for patients.

🔎 Key Facts about MDR-TB

• MDR-TB is a form of TB that resists the most powerful medicines used in standard treatment.
• Globally, over 410,000 people developed MDR-TB or rifampicin-resistant TB in 2022.
• Treatment success rates are improving but remain alarmingly low compared to drug-sensitive TB.
• Some strains are even more resistant, called extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB), which resist additional second-line medicines.

💡 Why it Matters
MDR-TB is not just a medical challenge—it’s a social one. Patients often face stigma, isolation, and barriers to accessing care. Without proper treatment, MDR-TB can spread and threaten communities worldwide.

✨ Hope and Action
Despite the challenges, people with MDR-TB can recover. New medicines, better diagnostic tools, and strong support systems are making treatment more effective. At tbpeople, we stand with those affected, amplify their voices, and advocate for access to care and dignity.

Just like you prevent a pregnancy by taking an emergency pill is the same way you can prevent HIV by taking PEP within 3days(72 hours) from exposure.

QUERY OF THE WEEK:
We received a call from a doctor in Gauteng asking about ART for a baby boy. The baby was born at 39 weeks weighing 2.6 kg and was receiving AZT+NVP for VTP.

The baby's birth PCR was positive but he was not brought in for a first post-natal visit (3-6 days). The mother was urgently traced but only brought him in today. He is now is 4 weeks old and weighs 2.8 kg.

The doctor was unsure of what to do?

ANSWER:
The baby should be switched from VTP (prophylaxis) to ART (treatment) immediately. The recommended regimen is ABC+3TC+DTG.

For infants that are > 2 kg and ≥ 37 weeks gestational age, ABC+3TC+DTG is recommended.

This case highlights the importance of the first postnatal visit at 3-6 days after delivery, to check the birth PCR result.

A person living HIV on treatment and has reached undetectable viral load can not s*xually transmit HIV to there partners even if they have unprotected s*x. This is the reason some of you are still testing negative even after been married to HIV+ partners or in discordant relationship.

As a person who have HIV I"m saying;

HIV vaccine (approximately 40k dosage) has arrived. This means acceleration of HIV will drop. But what's very important is that being vaccinated doesn't mean o ka ja ka nama... NO.

Vaccine reduces chances of getting HIV if condom burst or if you slpt with HIV + patients not knowing by mistake.

Be careful bcs there's other STDs and STIs that you can get from unprotected s3x.
