In this episode of The Integrative Shift Podcast, Dr Leah Murray, an Integrative and Functional Medicine doctor based in Cape Town, talks about screen time being a big disruptor followed by Elma sharing the importance of being heard deeply by your doctor.

Her approach looks beyond a single symptom to understand the full picture, from gut health and hormones to stress and lifestyle.

The conversation also touches on something many of us overlook, the impact that screen time has on our melatonin and cortisol rhythms, and how that ripple effect can throw off our s*x hormones and thyroid function. It speaks to a reality many women know too well, the experience of being rushed or dismissed instead of properly heard.

Dr Murray is part of SASIM, the South African Society of Integrative Medicine, a network of practitioners working to bring evidence based, root cause focused care to more people across the country. This is what it looks like when a doctor takes the time to truly listen, understand your story, and support you on an ongoing basis.

What happens when the doctor becomes the patient?

Dr Leah Murray spent 6 years in emergency medicine. High stress, night shifts, and relentless pace. Then her body said enough.

"After 6 years of that, I actually got quite unwell. I was really burnt out. I ended up with an autoimmune thyroid condition and it was kind of the kick I needed."

That wake-up call led her to open her own integrative practice in 2016. And she hasn't looked back since.

Because sometimes the body doesn't break down, it redirects you.

When we shift our perspective from fixing to understanding, everything changes. 🌿

Integrative medicine asks why.... and that question changes everything.

Each practitioner brings their own story, perspective, and way of understanding health.

This week, we’re featuring Dr Eloise Kroon, a GP practising at RevitaHealth

Her journey into integrative medicine began with a simple but powerful realisation.
That many patients weren’t truly healing.

Not because care wasn’t good.
But because something deeper was being missed.

Through exploring functional and integrative approaches, she began to focus on:
Lifestyle
Nutrition
Nervous system regulation
Root-cause investigation

And what she found is something many practitioners are starting to see.

That small, consistent changes can have a profound impact on long-term health.

Through South African Society of Integrative Medicine, practitioners like Dr Kroon are part of a growing community. One that values collaboration, continuous learning, and a more holistic understanding of patient care.

If you’re curious to hear more of her story, the full episode of The Integrative Shift is now available.

There’s a moment in practice where this becomes clear.
When the treatment works… but the patient doesn’t fully get better.

When the same patterns keep returning.
When something doesn’t quite add up.
That’s where curiosity starts to matter.

The willingness to ask:
What’s driving this?
What am I not seeing yet?
What else could be contributing here?

Because often, symptoms are not the problem.
They’re the signal.
And when we stay curious, we move closer to understanding the full picture.
Lifestyle.
Stress.
Nutrition.
Underlying imbalances.

Through South African Society of Integrative Medicine, this way of thinking is shared, challenged, and expanded. Not in isolation, but through a community of practitioners learning from each other.

Because better questions don’t just change the consultation.
They change outcomes.
