So often, people hold themselves back, not because they lack ability, but because they’re focused on who they’re expected to be. Bernie Siegel reminds us that growth begins when we shift our attention inward, away from performance, approval, and “acting”, and toward authenticity and being.

In group therapy, this shift is powerful.

At OTGrow, our training encourages participants to move from What do others think of me? to What do I think of myself? From doing more, to being more fully present. Through the IGM, group activities become spaces where participants can explore, express, and reconnect with themselves in meaningful ways. This is where real change begins.

What helps people feel safe enough to stop acting and start being in your groups?

Crafts in groups are not just about making something beautiful; they can become a powerful team process too.

In Part 4 of our Crafts in Group Therapy series, Louise explores how shared craft projects can be used to strengthen social participation, teamwork, communication, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and group cohesion. This episode is all about looking beyond the activity itself and seeing the therapeutic value in the process of creating together.

If you facilitate groups, this conversation will help you think more intentionally about how crafts can support deeper therapeutic goals especially when the therapist steps in and out of the process to guide the group when needed. In this video, we explore:

- Using crafts to facilitate teamwork.
- Supporting social participation through shared projects.
- Therapist facilitation in group process.
- Building cohesion through creative collaboration.
- Practical examples of team-based craft projects in groups.

What group craft projects have worked well for you? Let us know in the comments below.

What happens when a group moves beyond words?

In the Basic Experiential Workshop in Pretoria, Mandy experienced how movement can unlock vulnerability taking groups beyond surface conversations into something deeper, more real, and more shared. Because the truth is: Group spaces are vulnerable, but they are also where connection happens. Where we realise that what we feel isn’t isolated… it’s shared, just expressed differently. And that changes everything.

“You cannot teach a person anything. You can only help them find it within themselves.” This idea, attributed to Galileo, aligns deeply with how we understand growth at OTGrow.

In group therapy, change doesn’t happen because knowledge is delivered, it happens because the space allows people to discover, express, and claim what already exists within them. The IGM creates those conditions through shared activity, participation, and process. Treasures surface not because they are pointed out, but because the group makes it safe to uncover them. That’s what makes this model truly extraordinary.

Question: What have you noticed participants discovering about themselves in your groups?

Following feedback from a recent course evaluation, a few practitioners suggested that the Bumper Activity Book could form part of the Basic Experiential Course offering with the book included and its cost built into the course. It’s something we’re carefully considering, and before making any decisions, we’d really like to hear from a wider group.

What would work best for you?

• Yes, please combine them into one offering
• No, keep them separate so the book can be purchased independently
• I’m undecided / it doesn’t make a difference

Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments; this helps shape the direction we take.

Thank you!

Carl Rogers reminded us that the good life is not about comfort, it’s about courage, growth, and becoming more fully who we are.

In group therapy, we see this every day. Growth asks something of people. It stretches them, invites risk, and calls for environments where it feels safe enough to step into the stream of life rather than watch from the edges. Rogers, the father of counselling, believed deeply in human potential and in the role of skilled facilitation to support people toward an optimal life.

If this way of thinking resonates with you, our training offers space to explore Rogers’s ideas in practice and deepen your work with groups. Growth isn’t passive. It’s practiced.

What does “the courage to be” look like in your groups?

Social cohesion doesn’t happen in theory, it happens in rooms, teams, boards, and communities.

If your work places you inside complex group dynamics, this course offers a way of learning that stays connected to real life while you are living it. Advancing Social Cohesion in Groups & Teams invite professionals to engage with concepts and immediately test them in their own contexts: workplaces, organisations, systems, and communities, then return with insight that shapes the next session. This is not a passive course. It’s reflective, responsive, and grounded in lived professional experience.

- Online course.
- NQF Level 8 a requirement.
- 36 CPD points.
- Open across sectors.
