Tip of the Week πŸ’œπŸ’š

At OTGrow, we prefer the phrase attending to emotions rather than managing emotions. Why? Because emotions aren't problems to be organised, controlled, or put neatly into place. They are part of being human. Carl Jung spoke about emotions as the colour of our lives, and we believe they deserve our attention, curiosity, and understanding.

This week, take a moment to reflect: How comfortable are you with emotions, your own and those of others? Remember, we can only take our clients as deep as we are willing to go ourselves. How do you view emotions? As something to be managed, or as a necessary and natural part of what we are wired for? As group facilitators, practitioners, and helping professionals, our relationship with emotions shapes the spaces we create for others.

Relationships are rarely simple, and that's what makes them so meaningful. Human connection is a delicate process. It can be beautiful and messy, easy and challenging, comforting and stretching, often all at the same time. As we spend time with others, sharing experiences, listening deeply, and building trust, we slowly come to know one another more fully. In that process, we are invited to show more of who we truly are.

At OTGrow, we value creating spaces where this sacred journey can unfold naturally. Through connection and belonging, people are empowered to discover their strengths, express their authentic selves, and grow in relationship with others.

Because becoming more fully ourselves often happens in the company of others.

Want more engagement in your groups?

The key may be simpler than you think: take time to truly understand your clients. What challenges are they experiencing with social participation, interpersonal relationships, or social skills? When you identify the underlying social skill that needs development and make that the focus of your group, your sessions become more relevant and meaningful. When clients can see that their specific needs are being addressed, they're far more likely to engage, participate, and keep coming back. - Understand the problem.

- Identify the underlying social skill.
- Set a focused group goal.
- Create meaningful engagement.

Life was never meant to be lived in isolation.

On our own, we can achieve much. But it is in relationship with others that life becomes richer, deeper, and more meaningful. When we share our thoughts, conversations emerge. When we share our joys, celebrations follow. When we share our happiness, laughter multiplies. At OTGrow, we believe that the whole is truly greater than the sum of its parts. By opening ourselves to connection, vulnerability, and relationships, we create opportunities to grow, learn, support, and be supported. A beautiful life is not built alone. It is built together.

Tip of the Week πŸ’œπŸ’š

Are You Rescuing Your Clients? As therapists, it's natural to want to ease discomfort. A client starts to cry and we reach for the tissues. A difficult topic emerges and we jump in with reassurance, solutions, or a silver lining. But what if our urge to "help" is actually preventing something more powerful from happening? Sometimes healing happens in the discomfort. When we allow clients the space to sit with difficult thoughts and emotions, they often gain deeper insight, feel more validated, and discover solutions that are meaningful to them. This week, challenge yourself to pause before stepping in. Hold back the advice. Resist the urge to rescue. Create space for reflection. You may be surprised by the wisdom, resilience, and problem-solving ability your clients reveal when given the opportunity to find their own way forward. The goal isn't to fix the moment. It's to empower the person.

Have you ever been surprised by a solution a client came up with on their own? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

We often make sense of the world by placing people into categories, assumptions, and labels. Yet every person is far more than what we see on the surface. Behind each individual is a unique combination of experiences, relationships, challenges, strengths, perspectives, and dreams that shape who they are.

It is this complexity that makes every human being wonderfully unique. At OTGrow, we create spaces where people are encouraged to be fully themselves. By taking the time to understand each person's story, we discover the beauty, potential, and individuality that cannot be captured by a label.

Because true connection begins when we choose understanding over assumption.

Do you ever wonder why we actually do check-ins? Most facilitators include them in every group... But what if you're missing the real reason behind them?

Understanding the purpose of a check-in can completely change the way you facilitate your groups and the way your participants experience them.

In this week's OTGrow video, Louise unpacks the thinking behind one of the most important parts of the group process. Watch the full video and discover why this small step has such a big impact: https://youtu.be/hoJ_mMC0JUM

We do more than train. We walk the journey with you.

Facilitating groups can be rewarding, challenging, and at times surprisingly complex. That's why OTGrow offers Practice Consultations designed to support occupational therapists beyond the classroom. Through personalised consultation, Louise works alongside practitioners in their own practice environment, observing group sessions, providing constructive feedback, and offering practical guidance to strengthen facilitation skills in real-world settings.

Support extends beyond group work itself. We also explore the operational aspects that contribute to a thriving and sustainable service, helping you build a practice that functions effectively, grows with confidence, and delivers meaningful outcomes. Whether you're starting a new group therapy service, refining your facilitation skills, or looking to strengthen an existing offering, our approach is tailored to your unique context.

Because growth doesn't happen in a workshop alone. It happens in practice. Reach out to find out how we can support your professional journey. Your practice has potential. Let's develop it together.

Tip of the Week πŸ’œπŸ’š

One of the most under-estimated skills in group therapy is the ability to notice what isn't being said. Pay attention to non-verbal communication: Is someone avoiding eye contact? Is someone repeatedly seeking eye contact as if they want to contribute? Have several group members suddenly shifted in their seats or become restless? Do you notice changes in facial expressions, emotions, posture, or even breathing?

These subtle cues can tell us a lot about what a person is experiencing in the moment. As group therapists and facilitators, our role is to create opportunities for participation and connection. Sometimes a simple invitation such as, "It seems like you have something to say," can help someone feel safe enough to share.

This week, challenge yourself to slow down, observe, and strengthen your non-verbal observational skills. Often, the most meaningful insights are found between the words.
