June is Men’s Health Month in South Africa.
Men’s Health Month raises awareness of preventable health conditions and the importance of early detection among men and boys. It focuses on promoting early detection of preventable diseases like prostate cancer and heart disease, while breaking the stigma around mental health.
Traditional masculine norms like “indoda ayikhali” (a man does not cry) often hinder men from expressing vulnerability. Campaigns stress that checking in on your well-being is a strength, not a liability.
While many health conditions can affect anyone, some are more common among men or may be diagnosed later due to delayed health-seeking behaviour. Understanding the risks and recognising symptoms early can help men take charge of their health and access treatment when it is most effective.
Cardiovascular diseases remain one of the leading causes of illness and death among men. Many of the risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, poor diet, and physical inactivity, can often be prevented or managed through regular screening and lifestyle changes.
Just as the body needs care and attention, so does emotional and mental well-being. Yet many men find it difficult to speak openly about stress, anxiety, depression or other mental health challenges.
Seeking support is not a sign of weakness; it is an important step towards better health and well-being.
This Men’s Health Month, make your health a priority! Small steps taken today can contribute to a healthier future tomorrow!
