MEC for Health and Wellness, Faith Mazibuko, engaged with the community of Ramaphosa Informal Settlement during , a Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) initiative that provides a platform for residents to raise concerns, address challenges, and strengthen collaboration to improve service delivery.

Watch: Aissa Thambo, Responsible Pharmacist at Johan Heyns CHC, educating listeners about the growing trend of people taking medicines simply because someone on social media said that the medicine worked for them.

While social media can be a useful platform for sharing experiences and health information, your health journey is uniquely yours. A medicine that worked well for one person may not be suitable for another person—even if you have the same condition.

For example, two people can both have hypertension, but their vital signs, medical history, risk factors, other medicines, kidney function, lifestyle, and treatment needs may be different.

Pharmacy is so much more than simply dispensing medicines. This Pharmacy Month,Mantwa Sebolai, Pharmacy Manager from Sedibeng District Health Services and Aissa Thambo Responsible Pharmacist from Johan Heyns CHC took to the Sedibeng FM 104.8MHz airwaves to help listeners understand what pharmacy is, what pharmacists do, and how they contribute to healthier communities.

From providing advice on the safe and effective use of medicines, checking for possible interactions, supporting treatment adherence, and promoting disease prevention, pharmacists play an important role in ensuring that patients receive the right information alongside their medicines.

Traditional medicines can have therapeutic effects, but “natural” does not always mean “risk-free.” Some traditional medicines may interact with prescription or over-the-counter medicines, may not be appropriately dosed, or may contain substances that could be harmful. This is why it is important for patients to tell their pharmacist or other healthcare professional about any traditional medicines, herbal products, or supplements they are using.
