We've just received a message that touched every heart at Wide Horizon. A family whose loved one was in our care wrote: "Sr Ronel and every staff member, thank you very much for the time you looked after Daleen for us." Words like these remind us why we do what we do.

Caring for someone at the end of life is a sacred privilege, and we never take for granted that families trust us with the people they love most. To Sr Ronel and every member of our dedicated team, thank you for the compassion, patience and gentle presence you bring to each patient and family, often in their most tender moments.

A member of our community, Bianca, shared how back in 2011, her mom received wonderful care at our hospice. She remembered the kindness of the staff, how clean and welcoming it was, and a nurse who even visited her months later just to see how she was coping.

As the new management of Wide Horizon Hospice, we want to assure our community that this commitment continues. Our doors remain open to all who need us, and we're dedicated to providing the same caring, clean and welcoming environment that families have always trusted us for.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of our journey, and to those who share their memories with us. We're honoured to carry this work forward.

When serious illness arrives, a family's whole world shifts. For Yolinda van der Merwe, who is bravely fighting stage 4 cancer, that shift has been immense.

She has now been in our care for close to a month. She can no longer care for herself, and our nurses and carers walk beside her every day with gentle hands and a listening ear.

Yolinda's parents, Christo and Gina van Rensburg, are pensioners. They could not give her the professional care she needs at home. "I can't ask a dad to help me wash her," Gina told us, explaining why they brought their daughter to us. Christo said simply, "There can't be anything better than this place." Yolinda needs expensive medication, including strong pain relief, and that cost weighs heavily on a family already carrying so much.

How you can help Yolinda

We are asking our community to stand with her and her family. You can help by donating towards her medication costs, toiletries and personal care items, such as soap, lotion, wipes, adult diapers and toothpaste.

Yolinda's story is not unusual. Most of the patients in our care cannot pay for it, and caring for them is only possible because of the kindness of ordinary people. We warmly invite individuals, families, churches, businesses and organisations to kindly sponsor the care of a non-paying patient by sponsoring a bed. Every contribution helps us offer comfort, dignity and compassion to someone who needs it, and it tells a family that they are not alone.

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of a patient who was in our care for over a month. During that time, she became part of our Wide Horizon family, and she will be missed by everyone who cared for her.

To her family and loved ones, please accept our heartfelt condolences. We know that no words can ease the pain of losing someone so dear, but we want you to know that we are thinking of you and holding you in our hearts. It was a privilege to walk alongside you during this time.

Caring for patients and the people who love them is at the heart of all we do. Moments like these remind us how precious every day is, and how important it is to offer comfort, dignity and compassion at the end of life.

May she rest in peace, and may her family find comfort in the love and memories they shared.

Here, our care worker Patrick makes sure one of our patients is warm, comfortable and settled in her bed. It's a simple gesture, but for the person receiving it, it says you are safe, you are cared for, and you are not alone.

Some of the most meaningful moments at Wide Horizon Hospice happen quietly.

Palliative care is about so much more than medicine. It's about dignity, comfort, and treating every person as the whole, wonderful individual they are. Patrick brings his heart to this work every single day, and it shows in the way he cares for our patients and their families.

To Patrick, and to every member of our Wide Horizon Hospice family who gives so much of themselves - thank you. You make the hardest moments gentler.

Imagine if, during one of the most difficult seasons of your life, you had a place where you and your family didn’t have to face it alone.

For Yolinda, that place is Wide Horizon Hospice.

Yolinda has been receiving care at Wide Horizon Hospice for the past three weeks. Her parents, Christo and Gina, describe the challenges of caring for their daughter at home, particularly as pensioners and without the professional support needed to manage her complex care.

They made the difficult decision to bring Yolinda to hospice because they knew she needed more help than they could provide at home.

And here, they found it.

Her parents speak with deep gratitude about the care Yolinda receives from the hospice team, from professional nursing care and assistance with her personal needs, to help with medication and the compassionate support given to their family.

As Gina shared, “If she was in our care at home, we wasn't able to help her the way that they did here.”

This is what palliative care can make possible.

It is not only about caring for a patient. It is about supporting the whole family through an incredibly difficult journey, providing comfort, dignity, professional care and reassurance when families need it most.

Imagine if every person who could benefit from palliative care could access it when they need it.

This October, as we join the Association of Palliative Care Centres (APCC Assoc of Palliative Care Centres) “Imagine If…” campaign ahead of World Hospice and Palliative Care Day on 10 October, we invite you to imagine what could be possible if every patient and family had somewhere to turn. Imagine if no family had to face serious illness alone.

Yolinda’s journey is one that no family should have to face alone.
