A little over a week ago, I was in that space of excitement and nerves, waiting for the call that a mom was ready for her birth. I was checking my phone constantly just to make sure it was not on silent.
The call finally came at 1am on a Tuesday morning, but it was not the news we were hoping for. Mom had started bleeding and needed urgent care.
Within two hours, with the amazing team at Greenacres Hospital, mom had an emergency caesarean and both her and baby were stable soon after, with no further emergency care needed.
This was not the birth anyone had planned. Mom had not even gone into labour yet, which makes us even more grateful that she was in the right place at the right time.
The days that followed were filled with a lot of processing. Mom, dad and granny caring for the little one at home, all working through what happened. Talking through expectations and reality, and learning how to hold both gratitude and disappointment at the same time.
Mom is doing beautifully. Baby needed a bit of extra help with breastfeeding in the beginning, possibly because of the intensity of her arrival, but just one week later they are doing so well and settling into a good rhythm.
To this special family, thank you for allowing me to walk this journey with you and for showing what it looks like to hold both gratefulness and grief at the same time.
