Coconut oil and castor oil aren't the answer for every skin type.

Social media loves turning ingredients into miracle solutions.

But great skincare is rarely that simple.

Different oils have different fatty acid profiles, absorb differently and support the skin in different ways.

That's why at Jean Genie, we often choose oils such as argan, marula, baobab, kalahari melon seed, hazelnut and olive oil when creating products for dry, mature or depleted skin.

The secret isn't finding the most popular oil.

It's finding the right oils for your skin.

Because skincare should be personalised, not one-size-fits-all.

Castor oil isn't always the best choice for dry skin.

I know that's not what social media is telling everyone right now.

I've used castor oil in formulations for years, especially for oily and congested skin, because it can help lift excess oil and impurities from the skin.

For some people that's fantastic.

For others, especially those with already dry or mature skin, using castor oil on its own may leave skin feeling even drier over time.

That's because not all oils behave the same way on the skin.

Some oils are better suited to oily, congested skin.
Others are better suited to dry, depleted skin.

That's why I prefer looking at an oil's fatty acid profile rather than following whatever ingredient happens to be trending this month.

The best oil isn't the one everyone's talking about.

It's the one your skin actually needs.
