A little food for thought...

A gourmet cookie high in protein for a little less than the price of meat to feed 4! This might seem like a convenient on the go source of protein, that tastes like a biscuit. However, it is important to maintain perspective.

The 'health food' industry has exploded in the 16 years since I opened my practice. I remember a limited offering in a single isle at Dischem. Now, every supermarket stocks 'health food' products and a 'healthy range of products'.

I enjoy the 'live well' and 'simple truth' brands. It definitely helps consumers. But don't get too caught up in the hype. Spend your money wisely.

A dream team, in fact. We need BOTH protein and fibre. Include both in every meal and your future self will thank you. Muscle maintenance and gut health are key nutrition priorities as you age, and it is never too soon (or too late) to start investing in your future self.

Overnight oats is a wonderful protein-fibre combo you can make ahead of time. You can prep breakfast for 3 days in 5 minutes!

Per portion:
1/4 - 1/2 cup oats
1/2 - 1/3 cup plain yoghurt
Chopped fruit, 1/2 cup per portion
1 Tbsp chia seeds

Optional add-ins:
Cinnamon
Vanilla
Nut butter
Top with nuts or seeds to serve

Maybe you need more protein than what you are currently consuming, but few people need a high protein diet. You need adequate protein, spread across the day, as part of every meal .... with intention ... consistently.

This simple dish has become one of my favourite sides ... served with a braai or roast, it is both nutrient dense and delicious.

Roast thinly sliced (5mm) rounds of sweet potato and butternut with onion wedges, oil and a vegetable stock pot. I add a splash of water to soften the veggies as they roast. Pop it in the oven for 30 to 40 minutes in the oven. I add a load of baby spinach over the top and toss it in when ready to serve. Sprinkle with crumbled feta. Optional but a great touch!
