A TESTAMENT TO TEAMWORK, SURGICAL EXCELLENCE AND SERVICE TO HUMANITY AT KABWE CENTRAL HOSPITAL
Kabwe Central Hospital, in collaboration with specialist surgeons from the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), recently undertook a series of surgical procedures, with the main highlight being a complex operation to repair a longstanding traumatic rupture of the diaphragm and the pericardium, the protective covering around the heart.
The operation involved a 30-year-old woman who sustained a diaphragmatic injury in a road traffic accident in 2011. The injury had resulted in abdominal organs, including the small bowel, spleen and left lobe of the liver, moving into the left chest cavity.
Through a midline laparotomy, the surgical team returned the herniated organs to the abdomen and repaired both the diaphragmatic and pericardial defects. This complex procedure highlighted the importance of specialist expertise and collaboration between the two institutions.
Other operations performed during the joint surgical initiative included thyroidectomies, cholecystectomies, sistrunk and stoma reversals. All patients are recovering well in their respective wards.
The collaboration brought together healthcare professionals from both institutions.
