WHITE COAT CEREMONY - MULUNGUSHI UNIVERSITY

On Friday, 29th May 2026, the Biomedical Society of Zambia (BMZ) had the distinct honour of participating in the White Coat Ceremony for students of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences at Mulungushi University’s Parkview Campus.

The ceremony, held under the theme “Service Beyond the Coat,” marked a significant milestone for young men and women formally entering the health professions. Delivering the speech on behalf of the Biomedical Society of Zambia, the The Chairperson for the Research, Education and Training Committee (Madam Sharon Duba) extended warm congratulations to the students on behalf of the President and reminded them that the white coat is far more than a symbol of status. She emphasised that healthcare is a calling rooted in service, ethics, and humility, especially for laboratory professionals who often work behind the scenes.

Students were encouraged to:

- Combine knowledge with discipline, teamwork, and innovation.

- Treat classmates as future colleagues, not competitors.

- Recognise that healthcare is a team sport: no professional succeeds alone.

The BMSZ acknowledged the sacrifices of parents and guardians, stating that their investment contributes not only to their families but to the entire health system of Zambia. The university leadership and faculty were also commended for shaping the next generation of health professionals.

In closing, the students were urged to wear the coat with humility, discipline, and compassion and to remember that their service must always go beyond the coat.

As we exit the commemorations of the 2026 Medical Week, our president Mr Mutale Mubanga shares some reflections on laboratory systems, further calling on governments to invest in laboratory systems, and challenges laboratory professionals to go "to infinity and beyond" for EACH OTHER, not just for patients. Let's carry the laboratory message across the whole year, and yes, across history because it affects every human being.

CHAMPIONS ON & OFF THE BENCH

In celebration of Medical Laboratory Week 2026, under the theme “To Infinity and Beyond for Our Patients,” the Biomedical Society of Zambia hosted the inaugural Unity Cup Football tournament at NASDEC Sports Complex on 2nd May 2026. This event brought together healthcare professional bodies in a powerful display of unity. The event was promoted by the Biomedical Society of Zambia as part of this year’s laboratory week celebrations.

The day delivered thrilling competition as Biomedical Society of Zambia (BMSZ) emerged Men’s Champions, edging Pharmaceutical Society of Zambia 1-0 in a tightly contested final after overcoming Zambia Medical Association 5-4 on penalties in the semi-finals. On the women’s side, PSZ Ladies showcased class and determination, overcoming both BMSZ and Clinical Officers' Association of Zambia - COAZ to lift the trophy in a round-robin tournament.

Beyond the results, the Unity Cup was a reminder that while we represent different professional bodies, we are united by one purpose: going to infinity and beyond for our patients.
