Emergency vs Elective — Know the Difference

Emergency (Limb or Life-Threatening): Severe injuries, difficulty breathing, chest pain, major accidents, situations that need immediate medical attention

Elective (Planned Procedures): Routine surgeries, scheduled check-ups, non-urgent treatments, care that can be booked in advance
Knowing the difference can save lives and reduce unnecessary panic.

Nurses are the unsung heroes of healthcare, offering compassionate care and support during life’s toughest moments. Meet Eve, our Lusaka Clinic nurse, and hear her thoughts on Nurses Day.

“I care because I understand how important compassion is in healing. Sometimes it’s not just about treatment, but about making someone feel safe and cared for. After all, a small act of kindness and attention can make a big difference in someone’s recovery’

This year’s theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future,” emphasizes that investing in nurses is essential for creating stronger and more resilient healthcare systems in Zambia. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to every nurse for their dedication, expertise, and compassion. Meet Emily, our nurse at the KoBold site clinic, and hear her thoughts on Day 2026.

Working in high-pressure environments shaped my philosophy of care. Moments that matter to me include a person’s immediate need for care during an emergency, which can be the difference between life and death. I find fulfilment in being present in those critical moments, delivering skilled care when it matters most, and being part of a patient’s survival. Beyond her profession, Emily is a mother of three. She balances the demands of emergency nursing with her role at home, drawing strength from both.

Not all angels have wings; some wear scrubs. Meet Japhet, our oncology nurse in Lusaka, and hear his thoughts on Nurses' Day.

“As an Oncology nurse, I view cancer nursing as a partnership, the one principle that guides me to treat the person and not the pathology. To me, showing my human side means being vulnerable enough to care deeply, celebrate every milestone with the patient, and offer a steady hand when the news is difficult.”
